Does my laptop have to be on to charge phone battery through the usb port

I take it that you are trying to charge an external battery ( phone or i pad device using the usb port of the computer
is that correct ?
if so you may have to set up the comport for that device but usb uses 2 wires of the usb for power which will charge the device and 2 wires for data transmission

motherboards may or may not charge the cmos battery charge depending on how old the mother board is and the battery in use

Unfortunately this has happened to me with no less than two of my Blackburn Flea 2.0 USB Lights. The good news is that they are warrantied for life. The only reason I still buy and recommend this product is because when it fails I simply return it to my local bike shop and receive a new one.

I assume it is on the black screen with the empty battery. If it doesnt come up with the little lightning bolt to show it is charging then it is likely the cable or charger are dead. try laptop USB charging port instead. Note I have had faulty cables that would lock up each USB port tried until I rebooted. try a friends charging rig that you know works. Another thing to check, is pocket fluff in the charge port which may prevent you inserting charging cabel correctly.

I think you have an extra zero in that mAh rating...Make sure to fully charge and discharge a couple of times for full capacity and longevity of the battery.

No, the USB port does not supply enough power to charge the laptop nor can or should you attempt to charge the laptop in this way.

Even though you can charge other devices from a USB port, you are relying on the laptop's battery or the power coming into the laptop from the wall that has been diverted to the USB ports.

The only thing you would get from trying to charge the laptop from the USB port is a fried computer-shaped paper-weight.

It is not necessary to have the software downloaded as the USB is a universal port.So check to see if another USB port can be used on the laptop. However I would like to advice that such chargers are easily available and very economical( the chinese models could be less than $5 ) which will be the best for you than to always load up the laptop. So this becomes convenient and the battery of the phone will charge with the right current capacity required.

(1) have you charged from this USB port before?
(2) Are you using a laptop?

There are 2 basic types of USB ports. powered and non-powered.

Sometimes you have to go into your computer settings and tell the computer this USB port you want powered.

The reason I asked if you are trying to charge using a laptop is because most laptop USB ports or non-powered because It will drain the battery down too fast.

if this is the case you can look into buying a powered USB hub which you can plug into your non-powered port you should be able to then charge this way.

there would be 2 reasons for this, first is that the battery may be faulty. secondly the usb port on the laptop or the usb cable could be faulty.

If the case is first one then please replace the battery
If the case is the second one then please chk both the USB port and the USB cable to make sure this is the problem try charging the phone through the wall charger provided to you with the hand set.

The Samsung SCH-i730 doesn't have a USB port, but it has a different port that underneath the phone itself. You need to use an adapter so that you could connect it to the computer. Look for the adapter SCH-i730 Lil Sync USB connector.

There could be a possibility that the battery is not working correctly. To isolate this, try to use another battery to see if you will get the same problem.

NOTE: To take care of the battery, never charge it if it's not running out of charge. Never unplug the charging battery if it's not fully charged.

If your battery goes COMPLETELY dead, which it will do if phone is not turned OFF and not used for a long period of time, you will need to JUMP START it using you OEM SMT-5600 AC charger. Other AC chargers will not work for this purpose and neither will a USB port.

You can JUMP START the battery using a USB port by cutting off a USB cable to expost the red and black power USB PORT power pins 1 and 4. Remove your SMT-5600 battery and while the modified USB cable is plugged into your USB PORT, hold the BLACK wire to the negative (-) terminal and the RED wire to the positive (+) terminal for about a minute. Replace the battery in the phone and connect the phone to a USB PORT using a standard USB cable. The SMT-5600 charging light may not register for a while, but will eventually light amber to show it is charging, assuming your phone is recoginzed by your computer.

Note some mini USB cables DONOT carry the USB power leads through to the phone, only data. If you have a very thin USB cable, be suspicious the power leads are not being carried in the cable.

Since the USB PORT power is limited to 100ma it cannot hurt the battery, but will insert enough current into a totally flat batter to cause the battery to register a voltage large enough to alllow USB PORT charging, typically 3.7VDC.
