Ryan here again,
Just want to thank UPRon...the fix involving removing the side, powering up with the unplugged ribbon cable and going through the button hitting rigmarole, then powering back up and then going through the 2nd rigmarole of menu/buttons worked!!! Cover went back on easy enough and my D7160 is rolling nicely again. After that sequence of buttons I feel like I should have some free lives on Mario Brothers or though?
Thanks for the good info UPRon...
Good luck all.

Have not tried the reset yet, but just got the cover off...it is a 2 screwdriver operation/plastic tab. You need to get one small screwdriver underneath the bit of metal holding the plastic tab back, so that you screwdriver handle is facing out beyond the edge of the base of the unit. Then while applying just enough lever pressure to get the plastic catch lower than the metal holding it back, take your 2nd screwdriver to the plastic nub side to pry/push it outward while still holding the tab to clear the metal with screwdriver 1...it''ll bang the plastic up a bit, but I had success w/no breakage. There are some internal tabs too(plastic on plastic), but with firm and slightly anxious pressure those released w/out breakage too...good luck. I'll make another post if this reset procedure works for me..wish me luck? I want to put a boot betwixt the buttocks of HPs corporate management...total bs for a 300 and some dollar machine with 70 buck worth of new ink. Ryan

Hi Karen, This likely is either due to Bad/Expired Printhead or it could be defective printer ( hardware failure ). However you can give it a try. Follow the steps below and it should solve the problem, else we need to consider it could be defective Printhead or printer hardware failure.

The Photosmart D7160 does not has "*" and "#" because it is not a fax capable printer.

*** Fix your HP Photosmart D7360 (Reset Code/Master Reset) ***

2- Open right side of printer (looking at the front).

My 8250 printer displays error code 0xc18a020a

Solution ....ink System Failure...error 0xc..........

These instructions worked very well for me. If you follow the same instructions exactly,it should work for you too.

1) If you are looking at the printer FROM THE FRONT, remove the right hand side cover. On most HP printers, there are 2-3 tabs on top that will either pop out with a screwdriver under the top cover, or can be removed with screws. Make sure you have the printer powered off and UNPLUGGED.

2) On the front, bottom, right is a separate piece of plastic that is attached to the side cover that should also be removed. Remove the plastic cover from the side at this point, and you should see a circuit board. The following link will show how to remove the printer cover: http://hpphotosmart8250.blogspot.com/

3) There are two ribbon-type connectors on the top [center] of the circuit board that are plugged in directly to the top, inserted towards the bottom of the printer. One is slightly wider than the other. Again, make sure your printer is powered off AND UNPLUGGED. Unplug both of these ribbons [this can be done without removal of the circuit board from the printer, just use care and maybe some forceps or hemostats to help with reinstalling later], and make sure they are not partially plugged in or touching the board.

4) Plug in, and turn back on the printer. A new Ink failure message should come up (the numbers will be different.) Click OK on this, then unplug the printer again.

5) Plug both of these ribbon cables back into their respective connectors. Plug in the printer and turn it on. It should start back up, and REINITIALIZE as if you just turned it on for the first time. [The printer will run for a long time pumping fresh ink through the print heads during initialization, so be sure you have cartridges that are fairly new/full.] The ink status will be correct, and no more ink system failure messages.

6) Put your printer back together...

Printing problem hp D7160 error 0xc18a0001 please help

Hi,problem can be solved .Please check out this link for the Ink System Failure problem.

fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/39471

These are from the link above:

Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color buttons down at the same time and turn the 3310 off. Keep holding the buttons down until the printer shuts off and then turn it back on. You will have to turn the printer off twice and then it will recalibrate.

Our HP 3310 was having the same ink system failure. Tried everything I could find, and had just about given up when I found this forum. I didn't quite get the reset right the first time, but on the second try it worked. After holding down OK, Cancel, Black and Color buttons while turning it off, I turned it back on, it turned itself off and I turned it back on again, it started off doing the calibration and it took about 5 minutes, but when it was finished I had a working printer again.

Ink system has failed 0xc18a0206

This is easily fixed with the following key sequences. You do NOT have to open the printer and unplug a circuit board.

1) press * and # at the same time
2) press 1, 2, 3 and “support R0632M” should display
3) press > and “information menu” should display
4) press > and “configuration menu” should display
5) press OK and “hardware failure status” should display
6) press OK “failure status: clear”. Press OK to clear
7) press CANCEL
8) press CANCEL
9) press CANCEL
10) turn printer off, unplug power cord for 2 minutes, plug cord back in then turn printer back on.
NOTE: I did this and the fist time the error came back. Do the sequence again (as I did) and the error will be replaced with the usual print cartridge initialization screens. Print a test page to make sure.
