Hello if your referring to the door cylinder lock then you must remove interior panel and all handles to gain access.Once you have you will be able to disconnect the linkage usually snap on and off type then the retainer clip. Now you can take it to a lock smith for removal or dealer perhaps. If you wish you can go used at auto wreckers $10-$15 maybe change both the choice is yours Merry Christmas.

If you can get ahold of the broken piece with a pair of needlenose pliers, then just pull out the broken key. A pair of tweezers with narrow tips can be used also. Otherwise, you may have to pull the lock cylinder and take to a locksmith unless you are handy and can disassemble yourself.

How do i replace a ignition switch for a 1992 mercury sable

The ignition switch on Mercury Sable is integrated into the ignition cylinder. When this switch fails, you may need to purchase a special switch from a Ford dealership if the switch used a wireless transponder.

Instructions for NON Functional Cylinder (Cylinder will Not Turn or No Keys ):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. Using locking pliers, twist the cylinder cap until it separates from the lock cylinder.
4. Using a 3/8 in. (10mm) diameter drill bit, drill down the middle of the ignition lock key slot approximately 13/4 in. (44mm) until the lock cylinder releases from its breakaway base. Remove the lock cylinder and drill shavings from the lock cylinder housing.
5. Remove the retainer, washer, ignition switch and actuator. Thoroughly clean all drill shavings and other foreign materials from the casting.
6. Inspect the lock cylinder housing for damage from the removal operation. If the housing is damaged, it must be replaced.

To install:
1. Replace the lock cylinder housing, if damaged.
2. Install the actuator and ignition switch.
3. Install the trim and electrical parts.
4. Install the ignition lock cylinder.
5. Install the steering wheel.
6. Connect the negative battery cable, then check the lock cylinder operation.

Instructions for Functional Cylinder ( Cylinder will Turn with Key):
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Turn the lock cylinder key to the RUN position.
3. Using a 1/8 in. (3mm) diameter wire pin or a small drift, depress the lock cylinder retaining pin through the access hole in the upper steering column shroud (under the ignition lock cylinder) while pulling out on the lock cylinder. Remove the lock cylinder from the column.

To install:
1. Install the lock cylinder by turning it to the RUN position and depressing the retaining pin. Insert the lock cylinder into its housing. Make sure the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will permit the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder housing.
2. Rotate the lock cylinder using the lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
3. Connect the negative battery cable.

Door Lock:
When a lock cylinder must be replaced, replace both sides as a set to avoid carrying an extra set of keys.
1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield.
2. Remove the clip attaching the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder.
3. Pry the lock cylinder out of the slot in the door.

To install:
1. Work the lock cylinder assembly into the outer door panel.
2. Install the cylinder retainer into the slot and push the retainer onto the lock cylinder.
3. Connect the lock cylinder rod to the lock cylinder and install the clip. Lock and unlock the door to check for proper operation.
4. Install the watershield and door trim panel

Hope this helps.

How to change the lock cylinder

After you remove the plastic surrounds, you will see the ignition and steering lock bolted around the steering column.
there are some round headed screws holding it all together, these are called tamperproof, and when installed the hex head breaks off leaving the round head you will see.
To remove them I use a small chisel or punch to unscrew them, or alternately you could drill the heads off

Key ignition switch needs replaced lock cylinder how do i change key broke off inside damaged needs replaced wires broke off behind key switch

disconnect the battery and pull the air bag fuse out to diable the air bag. Remove the steering coulmb trim covers and expose the lock cylinder. If the lock cylinder can be turned and is functional then push in the bottom tab and turn the lock cylinder then pull the whole cylinder out. If the keys broke inside and the lock cylinder is not functional the bottom tab will need to be drilled out.

How to replace a lock cylinder on a 1992 ford explorer

Steps to remove and replace the lock cylinder To Remove the Lock Cylinder 1: Remove the cover UPPER/LOWER) from the steering column(usually 2 phillips screws in lower cover, directly behind the steering wheel. 2: Turn the key to the run position (the position before start). 3: Using a small diameter object (paper clip) slide the wire into the hole located underneath the ignition switch on the underside of the column. While pushing up on the pin in the hole, turn the key and pull outward. The tumbler should release and come out. 4: To replace, turn the key in the new cylinder to run. 6: Place the cylinder in the column where the old one came out. 7: Turn the key to the off position and the cylinder is now locked in place.

I bought a used steering column from a scrap yard for my 92 chevy lumina and the dealership doesnt have a key code for it how do i remove the cylindar from the column

After the steering wheel is removed, and the lock bolt is removed, you can pull out the lock cylinder. You may need to carry the column to a locksmith and they can handle taking out the cyl for you. You may be better to swap cylinders with your old one, or a new cylinder will come with a new key. Special tools are neede to remove the steering wheel and compress the spring for the lock plate.

How do i replace 1992 1500 chevy truck ignition switch?

If it's the ignition lock cylinder, there is a screw/pin behind the steering wheel. You'll have to remove the wheel lock retaining ring and plate. You'll see the screw just above or below the lock cyl. If I remember, it's about a 5/15 socket that fits it. Oh yea, the key will have to be in the "run" position to remove the cyl.
