The first step is see if the ECU is throwing any error codes. This may be hard since the car is old, and finding a suitable reader is an issue. I'd first suspect a fuel problem. Could be ...
* gummed injectors. Get some injector cleaner, remove the injectors and soak them for a couple of hours with 1/2 the cleaner. Put the other half in the gas tank.
* check the throttle body for cracked vacuum hoses.
* take the throttle body off and clean out the carbon and other dirt.

Could also be the igniter assembly or spark plug leads. If you have not changed the leads in living memory, it's time to do it.

Consider a the rebuilding of your transmission, or the replacement with a good used one.
There are shops that can fix this for a few hundred dollars, but most will charge you a whole lot more.
Most national brand shops are quite expensive.
An honest reliable one should be a few hundred dollars cheaper than a "National " shop.
Honestly, wherever you live may determine your success here, as some locations in the US have no option but a "Name" brand.
God bless your efforts.

does your model have an abs unit as this can be the fault, some areas when sold did not have this abs unit but with the abs unit it has valves to assist braking. if a piston in the abs has failed it stop it from working and only manual braking is used but this is limited.

Change your main relay assembly under the dash on drivers side. I was able to get my small hands under there and change mine out readily--not easy to get to as I didn't want to take the dash apart, but I got it done. If you have other problems after then find you a used TCU unit and change it out (passenger side where they put their feet, pull the carpet up, you will see easy, easily replaceable).
