Re Magellan GPS 310 There is/used to be an external power supply/data cable available from Magellan @ ~ AUD$60. The manual says the external supply is 3.3v @110mA. I tried this voltage from an external power supply, but it was not sufficient to reliably turn on the internal electronic change-over switch. So I have made up my own mobile supply using a cigarette lighter type mobile phone car charger (nominally 5v, but you may wish to lower the output voltage by adjusting one of the output control resistors attached to pin 5 of the (probably) MC34063 DC-DC Converter IC in the power supply). A connector plate using a piece of plastic with small machine screws or rivets to line up with the terminals is attached to the GPS using anither machine screw into the brass nut moulded into the rear of the case. You could use a similar system to use a USB connector to attach the GPS to your laptop for mobile mapping, also. The external supply/data connections are on the rear of the GPS310, above the battery cover. Looking at the rear of the GPS 210, the top left terminal is V+ and top right terminal is V- whilst the lower left terminal is Data In and the lower right terminal is Data Out. Hope this helps. I'm not sure that there is a car charger available for the GPS 310. There is no external port where you could plug it in, the only thing you can do for power is take extra AA batteries with you.

When the charger is plugged into the unit, look at the main menu screen. If the charger is working correctly, the green battery icon in the upper right-hand corner eill go out. If the charger is plugged in and there is a light lit on the charger but you see the green battery icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen on the main menu, then the unit is on battery power and the battery is not getting power from the charger. Common problem with these units are loose rear USB ports. More information can be found here:
hi marnie, if all the power and speaker cables are connected correctly, then you might have a faulty or shorted speaker in the vehicle.your unit is sensing a fault condition. check the impedance of eack speaker connected to the unit from the harness plug. if this does not help then your unit needs to be bench tested.
if the light is on the bit that goes in cigar lighter in car then fault in unit or wrong charger being used, i f no light on charger the replace/check fuse in charger ( unscrew tip ) and or check cigar lighter working in car
TRY THE RESET BUTTON, AND THEN GET A CARD FOR THE UNIT AND TRY AGAIN, HAVE YOU GOT OTHER INFORMATION LOADED ON THE UNIT THAT WAS NOT STANDARD? IF SO REMOVE. AIF YOU CAN SWITCH IT OFF, DO SO THEN HOLD FINGER ON BOTTOM LEFT OF SCREEN AND POWER BACK UP THIS MAY REBOOT IT
I had one but it broke so I know that at one time they exsisted.
