Here are some things you can try:
1.- The DVD /-R "standard" is not really a "standard". Not all drives recognize all brands of writable DVD's. Go to your DVD drive manufacturer website and see what brands of writable DVD's he recommends and/or update your firmware. May read only or - DVDs.

2.- Sometimes there might be a software glich somewhere. Uninstall all your DVD burning software (nero and roxio require special registry tools to be completely removed which can you find on their home pages or on the net), reboot, and reinstall your DVD drive driver. Reboot again and install ONE of burning software program (you can also try putting in a blank dvd before having any burning software installed to see if you get a pop-up window from windows asking what to do next). Some peole claim that there can be conflicts if you use two burning software programs at the same time (like nero roxio).

3.- It could be a hardware hookup problem. This can be the case if your computer is new, you can read normal DVD's, and you have never tried to burn blank dvd's before. Open up your computer box and check the DVD hookups. Do you have more than one CD/DVD drive?. Which is the master/slave?. Does this mach what windows reports?. Are the IDE switches correct?. Unhook the DVD drive and other drives and redo the motherboard-drive connection yourself. Check that all the pins align how they are supposed to, etc. It is allways a good idea to have the DVD /-R to be a master drive and to leave the other CD drives on the side while testing. If you feel unconfortable moving cables around -don't be- search the net for detailed instructions on this till you feel confortable enough to do it.

4.- Your DVD drive could be broken. Get hold of a friends computer and try to install it there. Does it work?. If it doesn't you should be able to get it replaced by the people who sold it to you.

5.- There might be a serious software or even a motherboard problem. Get a hold of a friends DVD drive that works for him and try to install it in your computer. Can you get it to work?. If you can consider replacing your DVD drive by one similar to your friends. If you can't check and recheck your botherboard settings and try swiching out the IDE cables with your friends. Condider upgrading your motherboard BIOS (this may void your waranty) or even reinstalling windows (backup your data first!)

My cd drive does not recognise cds

Okay. First of all is it a cd drive in your computer as opposed to a DVD drive? If you put a dvd into a cd drive it cannot recognize the dvd. A dvd drive can recognize a cd, but a cd drive cannot recognise a dvd.

Does your computer actually recognize the drive as being present?
If the drive isn't recognized by the computer try:

power off the laptop
Physically remove the cd or dvd drive
power -up the laptop without the cd/dvd drive
power off the latop and refit the dvd/cd drive
power it up again and see if the drive is
recognized

If the drive IS recognized by the laptop but won't play any disk it's probably the drive itself at fault. You can try gently cleaning the inside of the drive - the optic that reads the disk. However, the usual cause is failure of that optic which read the disk information. It cannot be repaired.

The alternative to fitting a new drive is to buy a portable dvd drive. They connect via a usb cable. Have a look on Ebay

Computer does not recognize CD/DVD disks in drive. My Windows XP PC has suddenly stopped recognizing disks in my CD/DVD drive. Device Manager shows that both of the listed drives (TST Corp. DVD +RW...

Most likely a problem with the reader on the CD/DVD Drive.

Very easy to swap out a different CD/DVD Drive. Add the new device and see if that resolves the issue.

I put in a blank cd and I cannot burn it because in my computer it shows that there is no cd inserted

Here you go...I hope this works for you....
CD/DVD Is Not Recognized
spacer.gif spacer.gif spacer.gif spacer.gif Many times, after inserting a disc into the CD or DVD drive, the disc is not recognized by that drive. CD-read and DVD-read issues can be caused by many sources. Perform the procedures presented in this General Computer Advice article when troubleshooting CD-read and DVD-read issues.

Begin with the first procedure and continue through the list. Try using the CD or DVD after each procedure is completed. For any procedure that requires changing current system settings, record the original settings before completing the procedure.
  1. Verify that the correct disc (CD/DVD) is used when prompted to insert the disc.
  2. For programs on DVD, verify that the drive containing the DVD is a DVD drive and not a CD-ROM drive. Most DVD drives will haveDVD printed on the front of the drive. For programs on DVD, consider the following:
  • DVD drives can read both DVD's and CD's.
  • CD-ROM drives can read only CD's.
  1. If multiple disc drives (e.g., CD-ROM and CD-RW, or DVD and DVD-RW, or CD-ROM and DVD-RW, etc.) exist on the computer that can read the disc (refer to the items under Step 2), insert the CD or DVD into the other drive and try the program again.
  2. If you are attempting to install a program and the installation does not begin after inserting the CD/DVD into the proper drive, refer to the program's instructions for the installation procedure.
  3. Clean the CD/DVD in the following manner:
  1. Place a small amount of nonabrasive liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD/DVD.
  2. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the CD/DVD in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse the CD/DVD thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. (Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.)
  1. Try to use a different CD or DVD in the drive to see if that disc can be read.
  2. If possible, insert the problem CD or DVD into the DVD or CD drive of another computer to see if the issue persists.

Why does my lenovo insist on my having a cd rom when i have a dvd writer installed? how do I fix it so that computer recoognizes it?

I have the same situation. My computer has a
DVD-RW/CD-RW installed yet when it is empty, the computer simply recognizes it as a CD drive. However, it will automatically recognize any DVD I place in the drive. Even a blank DVD-R. So it's not really a problem for me.

Also, if you type in DEVICE MANAGER in your windows search area, it will show you all your computer's hardware and peripherals. I have Windows Vista 64 bit and in device manager it does recognize it as an ATAPI DVD under "DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES".

I haven't seen a DVD burner yet that won't play or write cd's; maybe this is standard.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as it performs the functions (play/burn DVD's?)

Hope this helps.8a17955.jpgb9e40e6.jpg

Blank cd's are not recognized by the Dell Inspiron cd burner

I would first try removing the device in the control panel, system, device manager and then reinstalling the driver. There may be a problem caused by a windows update. In general CD drives rarely go bad. If the CD works say for a music CD then it should work for blank cd. You may also want to check the CD type. If you accidentally used a DVD, that won't work and in some of the older CD drives, they may not handle every type of CD format.

Good Luck
