Hi, I have an old Acer Aspire desktop that I am working with, it originally had Windows 98 and the two USB ports on the back were not functional, I upgraded the operating system to Windows 2000 in hopes...

You have to install usb drivers for win98 and win2000 operating system.
But if you install windows xp usb drivers not need because winxp recognize usb device as plug and play.
Windows xp is fast and more flexible than win98 and win2000.

click on above link and download usb drivers for win2000.

I have a Aspire 3680 Series, when I turn it on I can not get the mouse pointer to work it does not even show up on the screen at all.

try to use the touchpad only, if that causes problems, try connecting a ps/2 or usb mouse

under win98se, win2000 or winxp it should work out somehow,
if not, deactivate the touchpad via the device manager, reinstall the appropriate driver for your windows version, reboot.
Still got the problem?
run a hardware detection software like pcwizard 2008( freeware) to find out whether your system recognizes the touch pad at all.
it could also be a hardware malfunction:
if yes, permanently deactivate touchpad and use mouse instead.

Update 4090 xcdt

Yes, you can upgrade from Win98 to WinXP. The minimum hard drive requirements for WinXP is 1.5GB and the minimum RAM requirement is 64MB. You will also need a CD ROM for the install. Now those are the minimum requirements so don't expect it to go very fast. If possible I would recommend you upgrade to Win2000. WinXP and Win2000 are almost identical. The minimum hard drive for Win2000 is 650MB and for RAM it is 64MB. So you could still use your 4GB hard drive and have plenty of room. You will need a CD ROM for the Win2000 also.
Good luck if you have anymore questons let me know,

Driver touchpad

hi D.

your laptop has same components as the Toshiba
Tecra M8-ST3094 !

- try townload the driver fitting to your Windows version at :
(copy and paste the link!)
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=DL&os=&category=&moid=835450&rpn=PTM20U&modelFilter=&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768664

download it directly onto the laptop or any other internet-pc available, transfer the data using usb-flash drive (usb-stick, usb-mp3-player) or burn it onto a CD
- copy the downloaded driver software to your harddisk, the desktop for example, then double-click onto the .exe file(it is a selfinstaller for winxp and win2000) let it work it's magic, reboot the laptop and things should be fine now!

good luck
