Make sure the mute is not on, if you use more than one remote make sure none of them have the mute on. If you want to avoid repair you can use a low cost surround system as it has a separate audio path and should work for you...

Get into the cable box menu and look for audio settings, chances are your digital output from the cable box is off. If you still can't get audio, reply with your Cable Box Make & Model and I can help you further. Hope this helps
Check the audio setting in the volume control in the accessories folder in the start menu. make sure that all of the audio channels are switcched on, and thaty none of them are muted. If this does not work, try uninsztalling the audio device in the Device Manager, and restart.
