I have a powershot s400 canon camera, I just charged the battery and when I turned it on to take a picture the screen was all distorted. This happened before and then just fixed itself. This time it was longer. the camera is only about 2 years old.

Hi.

The distorted and blurred picture and often in false colors is probably caused by a defective CCD sensor. The CCD sensor is the light sensitive chip that captures the picture. This is located inside the camera body, right behind the lens.

CCD sensor is a common failure. Here a forum. Canon released a bulletin on the problem and was covering repair on models from several years. Here the forum, Canon removed the bulletins from Web. Conatact Canon to find out if you are entitled to repair.

There was also a firmware update for S400, but I don't think it will do anything about the problem.

Here support page.

Canon has recognized that the IXUS400\S400 camera had two manufacturing defects. One is a memory card error and the other is the CCD image sensor which can cause the LCD screen to act dysfunctional. Contact Canon. They will fix these issues for free. Even if the camera is out of factory warranty.

Sounds like your LCD might have gone bad. The LCD might cost more than the camera costs, but there are a few places on eBay that you can buy a repair and replacement service from for pretty cheap.
