This just happened to our Kenmore Elite -- just as I was about to go to bed I smelled fumes and went downstairs to our kitchen and saw thick smoke and smelled awful fumes. I will contact Sears/Whirlpool tomorrow -- but I am nervous about getting this repaired. What if this happens again? I was fortunate that I had not gone to sleep.

would you please describe the fumes like raw gas fumes oil smell smells rich etc and color of the exhuast fume and if real smokey extra smoke

You first thought was probably the correct one...the fumes from the new paint may take a few days to disspate enough not to react with the heat of the dryer...I would give it a few dyas to clear before looking any further...

just ry to run in on air dry for a while mayee wth dryersheets. charcoal and baking soda are also good at absorbing smell if you can find a way to implement them maybee baking sod box in dryer not running

lean it back and look at the belts.

have you tried lower spin speeds? I found with heavy items such as towels and jeans it is best to lower the spin speed. also washing like heavy items on a certain wash cycle is best - i.e. towels on bluky/bedding.

I contacted my lawyer who advised that I file a Civil Complaint against Sears so that is what I have done.

Had the exact same problem (Control panel burning up, sparking, and smoking during wash cycle) last night with our Kenmore Elite DW model 665.16293400 purchased Nov. 2004. I have reported it to the CPSC and www.kitchenaidfire.com and will be contacting Sears first thing tomorrow. It is outrageous that this problem is apparently so widespread with nothing being done about it! I have no doubt my kitchen would have been in flames if I had not been sitting right here to shut off power to the D/W.

Soon as you turn it on, downstairs is full of smoke. Sometimes after preheat goes off, smoke clears and its fine. But I'm afraid to use it because last time I saw a flame inside.

If your afraid to use it, do not hesitate to call service. Nobody wants a fire!
