The function dies not exist in the OS's prior to OS Version 2.53 MP.
Anyway, if you upgrade the OS to version 2.53 M(ath)P(rint) you will have better handling for the fractions. You will also have a command remainder( accessible through the CATALOG.

  1. Press [2nd][0] to access (CATALOG)
  2. Press [x] to jump to forst command that starts with R,
  3. then scroll down till you reach remainder(.
  4. Select it and press [ENTER]
  5. Command echoes on main screen
  6. Enter two numbers, separated by a comma, close the parenthesis and press ENTER.
  7. You can also use Lists as arguments.
A quicker way to get to the command is to press [MATH] then right arrow to highlight the [NUM ] menu. Scroll Up to reach 0:remainder(

I have a fraction for my ti-84 plus silver edition 3 1/6-7/8 ad it comes out 2.291666667 then converts to 55/24 but how do i simplify it into 2 7/24?

Unfortunately, there is not a simple solution to this, however there is a solution. It is easy to get it displayed as a fraction using the >Frac from the MATH button. It is also easy to find that 24 goes into 55 two times. Now, there is a function that is on the calculator Remainder. This can be found either in the catalog or by going to MATH arrow to NUM and Remainder should be listed. So, you could type Remainder(55,24) and it will return 7. Seven is the numerator and 24 will still be the denominator. So, it is not an extremely fast way to find the mixed number, but it works.
An alternative to using the remainder function would be to just type 55-24(2), which would also return 7. Either method works, just a matter of preference.

One of my students has a new TI 84 calculator. When he enters a problems like 2^3*8^2 the calculator works the problem like it is 2^(3*8^2). Should he return the calculator or is there a setting that...

He apparently has the new operating system working in MathPrint mode. Try pressing 2 ^ 3 right-arrow * 8 ^ 2 ENTER.

The right-arrow terminates the exponent and continues with the remainder of the expression.

How do a take a division problem and square root it on a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition for example 87.34/5 then square root the answer. I can do the math, but how do I take the dvision answer and square...

Two ways:

2ND [square-root] ( 8 7 . 3 4 / 5 ) ENTER

8 7 . 3 4 / 5 ENTER then 2ND [square-root] 2ND ANS ENTER

The first sequence takes the square root of 87.34/5, the second sequence calculates 87.34/5 then takes the square root of the result.

I need to know how to do fraction on my TI-84 plus

Technically a fraction is just the ratio of two integers (division of two integers). To enter a fraction, type in the numerator, press the division key, then enter the denominator.

The problem is preventing the fraction from being evaluated. To do that press [MATH] key, select [1:

Highlight Normal on the first line and press ENTER.
Highlight Float on the second line and press ENTER.
Press 2ND QUIT to exit.
