New battery incorrect - power supply no longer

smoke from the radio because of wrong polarity of the battery indicates that you will most likely need a new radio

If the mains (line power) fuse goes when the vehicle is not connected, then suspect the charger.

If the fuse blows when connected.. make sure all lights and drive motor controls are first switched off.

N.B. Item 7.4.3 of the manual (see attached link) says the supplied power pack will not charge if below 16 Volts

and quote:
"If the battery voltage falls below 16
Volts, the batteries can no longer be
charged with the battery charger
supplied. In this case you must
contact your dealer"

(A technician would try charging each battery with a regular charger)

It is very important to check the power output produced by the ac adapter. Make sure that the output voltage and ampere of the new power supply is the same with the original power supply provided with the laptop. The new power supply you purchased may be producing lower or higher ampere than the required power to turn on the unit and charge the battery.

I suggest to purchase ASUS Eee recommended power supply or ac adapter for your laptop before it gets damage by incorrect power voltage or ampere used.

your problem is the power supply is bad, that's why it won't run without battery, and also, the old battery you replaced is probably good

Sounds like you got an incorrect power supply OR the SR16 has a failure creating too much load.

The power supply should be a 9VAC at 1 amp (1000 ma)

The power supply MAY get warm to the touch but should not get real hot.

Without the SR16 pluged onto the power supply it should barely get warm. If the SR16 doesn't work, then it probably has an internal failure... LIKELY the internal rectifier filter combination.

try to contact dell spare parts department. they may give you a good price.
