    I HAD THE SAME.

Go in the bios find the network setting and enable the internal wireless card.
to turn it on you press thr FN key and f5 together.

unfortunatly my bios has a supervisor password, do not try to reset the cmos by unplugging the cmos batt. it will want the default password, I cannot pass the poweron password anymore. I will find a way, but now s.o.l.

The T42 has a bulit-in wireless network adapter and a LAN network card. T42s most likely have an Intel wireless card or less likely a Cisco wireless card.
Your wireless network adapter may have been disabled in the BIOS
and/or
The drivers for the wireless network controller has not been installed.

To check the network adapter go to the Control Panel, Click on System, click on Hardware Tab then Device Manager. Then scroll down and click on Network adapters. If you don't see your network controller or you see a yellow ? against Other devices for the Network controller. Then either it has been disabled and/or the driver was not installed.

To get the driver for the network controller you need to dowload it from the IBM/Lenovo WEB site their support/download page from a computer that has Internet access. Make sure you select your laptop model and the driver for your Windows version.
Install the driver and you then need to configure the wireless adapter to suit your wireless router settings before you can access the Internet.

Does my thinkpad 42 have a wireless switch? We cant find any networks in range but time warner says my routers good and system properties are good

Hi

IBM ThinkPad T42 is a Series number rather than a Model number.

There are various models in this series. Some models have Wifi capability. Others don't.

Look underneth your notebook to see the full model number, then check here for the exact specifications for your specific model:

I hope this helps.

My wireless card on my T42 ThinkPad doesnt pick up wireless networks. I'm not sure its even installed.

Check Device Manager to see if the wireless card is enabled and working. If it has a yellow ? against it then the wireless card driver was not installed.
Some model ThinkPads have different network cards drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the network drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.
When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it’s file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.
Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

Where is the wireless switch located on the IBM thinkpad T42

Unlike the newer laptops, the T42 doesn't have it's own wireless switch. So in order to get the wireless working, you need to also make sure that the Power Management driver and the Hotkey driver are installed as well.

Load the drivers in this order:

1) Power Management driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4GXPEG
2) Hotkey driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68000
3) Wireless Driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70504
After downloading it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint and run the setup file from there.
4) Access Connections (Optional) - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4ZLNJB

Where is the wireless button on t42 thinkpad

There's no hardware switch to activate and deactivate the wireless networking, but pressing Fn and F5 brings up a menu that allows you to turn Bluetooth on/off, WiFi on/off or both. It seems like IBM isn't satisfied with standard toggle buttons like other notebook manufacturers - even pressing the Fn and F7 buttons to switch between internal and external screens, brings up a menu with multiple display settings and resolutions.
Hope this helps,
David
