Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

Try replacing the relay (switch).

have you tried cleaning the drain(s) pipe(s)

For my Maytag Refrigerator Model # MSD 2756 GE, I had to hold the "Light" & "Lock/Unlock" buttons simultaneously until the "Change Filter" light went off instead of the "Water" & "Lock/Unlock" buttons.

replace the microswitch

If the "relay" is the bimetal clipped to the top of the coils , then the adaptive defrost timer is bad . Pt # 61005988 .This small electronic board , is located in the control panel .

Turned out to be a bad circuit board on the back of the unit which caused the refrigerator/freezer to freeze up. Replace it, thawed the refrigerator compartment, and it works fine. Cost me less than $200 including service call.
