The USB drive is not the C: drive. Open the windows file manager and you should be able to find it. Right click the Start button and open Explorer.

I had a similar problem with my pc( OS=XP SP2) with the same external drive model. I was able to solve it by downloading and installing WindowsXP-KB908673-x86-ENU Hotfix Package from Microsoft Corporation. I hope it works for you.

OK all you genius's. Here's another and very probable solution. While having the same problem, I tried everything you've read here, and more. Nothing worked. But, I am smart enough to look outside the box. I have three more of these drives on another system in the office, so through the process of elimination, I found that the little "power supply" was the culprit of all my problems. Swiped one off of a known working drive, hooked it to drive in question, and Presto!!! Good reason to never get rid of all your cables and stuff when a device goes bad.

Like many others, I had problems with the drive and tried some obvious solutions like swapping the old USB cable with a new one, trying different computers with XP, Vista, etc. and nothing worked. One solution I found was to open the HD case and swap the drive into a spare bay on your PC tower. I didn't want to go there since the case is very hard to open and I didn't want the hassle. So, the solution I tried was to replace the power supply. I saw this solution a few times in some forums so I figured to give it a try. I Googled the exact specs and found a comparable power supply at 12V Adapters (Aurora CO). It is not a Maxtor supply but I figured as long as the output was correct it may work. Just got the adapter today, plugged in the HD, and YES, IT POWERS UP and the XP at my work recognizes the drive! Now I have all my files available and accessible. Good luck to all, I hope this works for you. By the way, one lesson learned: BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP! Drives are so cheap now there is no reason not to (except for being lazy)!

There is a troubleshooter that describes steps for these symptoms on Seagates Knowledge Base website.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 stopped being recognised, clicking sound coming from box

The clicking sound from a hard drive is known as "The click of death". This drive is faulty and if you need data off this hard drive then there are companies that can recover data off a faulty hard drive BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, after years of use my Vista machine now tells me that the USB Device isnt recognised.

However last month I found that the Maxtor is no longer recognisable to my machine. Reading through related postings on other sites it appears that Vista updates from Microsoft may be the reason why this functionality has suddenly ceased. I presume the security updates in particular may have meant that the Maxtor 3200 is also considered a potential threat. The question is who will take responsibility for resolving this issue of Maxtor 3200 users no longer being able to access their back up files via their Vista based machines. Personally I believe the onus is with Microsoft

hope this helps

I have a Maxtor Personal Storage and I am

I found this info on Seagate forum (Seagate owns Maxtor). http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=PersonalStorage&thread.id=38

The error 10 is an indicator of a drive gone bad. But, there are a few on there that say they were able to get them working again. If you device is under warranty, try working with Seagate support first for a replacement. If you have data on them, you may need a recovery specialist to salvage that data.

How can i install the maxtor personal storage 3200? are there any drivers that i need to install?

You do not need any driver. This device is plug and play in Windowsmag-glass_10x10.gif XP. If it doesn't work then you probably have a USB problem. Have you checked in Device Manager to insure the usb port is working properly and is compatible with the drive, eg: usb 2.0 or usb 1.1?

for any further information refer to this link :
