Green light stays steady. If you put your ear on the drive, you can hear it clicking at half second intervals, as if it's trying to spin up, but can't

I have stored all of my pictures and special files on the MBPS 3200. It worked fine for quite a long time. Now I can't find the drive on my computer and the light is lit all the time. I disconnected it from the USB port and shut my computer down. Then I reconnected the MBPS 3200 to a different USB port. When I rebooted the computer a wizard appeared that recognized the new hardware and asked me to reinstall the software. I don't remember a software disk but if there was one I can't find it. Can you help me PLEASE.

I had a similar problem with my pc( OS=XP SP2) with the same external drive model. I was able to solve it by downloading and installing WindowsXP-KB908673-x86-ENU Hotfix Package from Microsoft Corporation. I hope it works for you.

You need to open the enclosure and either put the drive in another enclosure or connect it directly to your computer.

Or you can pay to send it to data recovery people and they will get all the data off.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

Maxtor external Hard drive not recognised on any pc

Hi cimbom76,
Sorry to hear of your problems. The following is taken from the Seagate (they own Maxtor) website at :-

http://forums.seagate.com/stx/board/message?board.id=PersonalStorage&thread.id=192

For Maxtor Basics and Personal Storage 3100 and 3200 drives, there may or may not be an LED on the power supply, but the light on the drive should usually remain solid during normal operation, while powered on.

1. But if the power supply does have an LED on it, isolate the problem by connecting the power supply into a power outlet without the hard drive connected to it. If the LED blinks in this configuration, the power supply is faulty. Please contact Technical Support for replacement information.

2. If the LED remains solid, connect the drive. Once it is connected, turn the drive on. If the LED begins blinking, the drive has an electronic failure. Please replace the drive. You can create a warranty replacement order to replace the unit.

From what you have said i'm afraid it sounds like there is an electronic failure of the drive. I haven't followed the process through but they do offer a Data Recovery Service at :-

https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-us

There is an online form to fill in or you can telephone
020 7432 4619 to talk to a Data Recovery specialist.

I hope this helps and I hope that you can recover your pictures and videos.
Mark.

Check for error code 10 in the Windows device manager. You likely have a power supply problem.
