has anyone opened this laptop up to perform maintenance on it? is it refurbished? if the case hasnt been opend, how old is it? from what it sounds like it could be a misplaced cable (not hooked back up) or bad speakers (blown speakers) or that your sound controller chip on your motherboard is dead.

The main reason would be sound drivers, i recommend uninstalling the drivers in the control panel, hardware sound, device manager, right click, uninstall.. and reboot afterwards, if that doesn't fix the problem than it could be the sound card it blew out, i recommend buying a new sound card.... try hooking up a pair of speakers to it, if you get sound, then its the speakers on your laptop that are bad... good luck!!

My hp pavilion p7-1118 doesn't appear to have a sound card

Make sure the volume is turned up and not muted. Check the device manager to see if the sound/audio devices have any conflicts or is not working properly. If you have a megaphone at the bottom right near the time, right click on it and select properties to check it out. You might also click Start/Control Panel and look for Sound/Audio in there to check out.

You can always download your Audio Driver and reinstall it.

Get onlineand got to www.google.com In the google search box type: "AcerSupport" (without the quotes). Look for downloads and drivers. Enter your model number and operating system when requested. Download andinstall the drivers.

check whether the drivers are installed properly and try by re installing the driver after removing the existing sound rivers
This can be done by using the device manager
In the device manager you can find whether driver is installed if it is installed and not working means right click it and give uninstall ,automatically it will search for drivers and ask the required driver or it install if backup is present already

The sound doesnt work anymore on my computer!

Try:
1. Check if the sound is on mute.
2. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter. Check if the sound driver is not installed or has been disabled.
3. Check the speakers. Use external headphones, if the headphones are working properly, means the speakers of Laptop are damaged.

HP Pavilion mute button stays red...won't disable (unmute)...I have no sound.

try downloading and installing the latest audio driver from the HP website. choose your operating system and the website directs you to the drivers. sometimes windows updates install the wrong drivers ans causes the hardware to malfunction properly, so try uninstalling these updates using system restore point, if this doesn't work do the first step.

HP Pavilion Entertainment PC

I was having a similar issue. My volume button worked fine muting and unmuting the volume, the light just stayed red either way.

I went into Device Manager, then expanded the Sound, Video and Game Controller options, I rolled back the driver and it was an instant fix for me :)
