Hi - how do I test my lid switch? I have what is apparently a fairly common problem with my Kenmore 90 Plus Series washer (which we bought new in 1998). Doesn't properly spin the clothes dry at the end, all of a sudden. The Sears Repair people said it sounds like the lid switch, and they told me the part is $20, but the service call will cost around $150 total. I'm wondering 1) can I fix this myself without getting fried (I am not exactly Mr. Fixit), 2) Should I buy a new machine at this point rather than pay $150 for a fix on a 12 year old machine?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.

You won't get fried.....

Just make sure to disconnect the power to the washer before opening the console.

Plug the short wire in and then plug the washer in.

If it is the switch, follow the illustrations for how to remove the cabinet. You should be able to see where the switch mounts and be able to replace it yourself.

I HAVE A KENMORE 90 SERIES WASHER JUST REPLACED

it mounts to the metal where the lid closes, not on the drum... there's usually two holes where the screws go through... and a third hole where the actuator(plastic post) on the lid goes through to activate the lid switch...

Not spinning

I am assuming that you washer is agitating, right? If it is...and, your symptoms are: normal fill, agitate, but when it gets ready to spin, the washer stops - this is usually a symptom of a defective lid switch. Try opening and closing the washer lid, you should hear a distinctive clicking noise as the lid closes. This will activate the lid switch, which will control the timer and all other functions. The lid switches come in two basic types for Kenmore:

1. It will be located on the right-hand side of the lid opening as a small slot with a plunger from the lid activating it as it closes.

2. It will be located on the left-hand side of the lid opening in the back with a rod on the lid hinge activating the switch.

This is a fairly common problem that can be easily fixed. The switch usually costs about $35.

If this sounds like the symptoms you are having, let me know and I can determine what part number you might need, and give you advice on how to fix it.

If not, please post back with comments and elaborate in a little more detail. I hope this helps you.
