Looking like there is an issue with the powerboard on the monitor. This problem you are having appears to be common with this monitor, with a lot of them failing for no apparent reason

What should the display rate be set at for a Viewsonic VG910s. The default is 60 MHz - can it be changed to 72 MHz?

The default is 60Hz (60 cycle, not 60MHz (60 million cycle) for Vertical refreshing rate.
From user manual:

"For the best picture quality set your LCD display timing mode to:
VESA 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz. "
and here is the warning:

"WARNING: Do not set the graphics card in your computer to exceed the maximum refresh rate of 75Hz; doing so may result in permanent damage to your LCD display."

I just recently acquired a Viewsonic VA521 LCD monitor from a friend who experience a power surge/outage. When hooked up and powered on, it shows the desktop for a split second, then seemingly goes black,...

It is possible that you can adjust your refresh rate. You may need another monitor to set the rate.

You may also be able to boot into safe mode. Try pressing F8 as soon as the system completes the POST (if you can see it). From safe mode, you can adjust the rate.

Can you get anything from the monitor without connecting to a computer? You should try to reset the monitor to its default settings.

I havE A VEIWSONIC Va520 when I turn it on , it brings up a screen saying out of range H-30-62 KHZ V-50-75 Hz what does this mean?

1. maybe the problem is with windows, because the refresh rate is set to an acceptable value

2. your lcd screen runs at higher hz than 60

3. you are running a resolution higher than 1024x768 15" LCD's generally can only support 1024x768 whereas larger panels support higher resolutions.

Possible solutions

1. The LCD you buy is shipped with a plastic cover over the screen which shows maximum resolution and recommended refresh rate. When you first turn on your computer press F8 to access safe mode, after you enter safe mode, configured the required setting on your lcd monitor. when you are done, reboot or restart your computer, hopefully your computer should be fine.

2. attempt to access the bios setup utility by pressing del or f2 of your keyboard after you see the initial display of your pc, if you can see it, the problem is with windows because the refresh rate is set to an acceptable value. Set it to its required settings by entering safe mode as posted on no.1

Go for the highest your video card will allow to remove any flicker from the screen, or the max whichever works best.

I also have a Viewsonic Flatscreen, they are great and I had two Viewsonic CRTs before that.

Out of range

Your windows video settings are for a monitor that has more capability (eg more pixels/finer resolution, higher refresh rate, more colour bits than the current screen can handle so it's spit the dummy.

Run your computer in safe mode (I believe that uses basic video driver) and set the video display options to a very low level, then re-start your computer again in normal mode, and set the options to the native resolution, refresh rate etc of the monitor. These should be listed in the specs that would come in the box with it (may be resolution: 1,680x1,050)

Viewsonic VA720 LCD 17'' monitor LED light blinking, no display

there is atleast a 5 year difference between your computers. Technology has made a huge jump from back then, especially in graphics cards!!! that LCD was probably made after your computer, alot after your computer as a matter of fact. So it is your graphics card. get a new computer, its time to update

Monitor

did some thing change your refresh rates in the display section of your settings for the monitors? also have you tried to hook up another computer to see if it will display on the monitor? if nothing displays on the monitor then the monitor is faulty. if another computer (even a laptop) can display on the monitor then the video is set to high for the monitor to understand it. to reset monitor refresh with out a screen that will work you need to get into safe mode and reset the display settings to 60 hz and only 800 x 600 for starters and increase them until you cannot get a signal. if you cannot do this then a service shop will be able to assist you
