What should the display rate be set at for a Viewsonic VG910s. The default is 60 MHz - can it be changed to 72 MHz?

The default is 60Hz (60 cycle, not 60MHz (60 million cycle) for Vertical refreshing rate.
From user manual:

"For the best picture quality set your LCD display timing mode to:
VESA 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz. "
and here is the warning:

"WARNING: Do not set the graphics card in your computer to exceed the maximum refresh rate of 75Hz; doing so may result in permanent damage to your LCD display."

Out of range

Your windows video settings are for a monitor that has more capability (eg more pixels/finer resolution, higher refresh rate, more colour bits than the current screen can handle so it's spit the dummy.

Run your computer in safe mode (I believe that uses basic video driver) and set the video display options to a very low level, then re-start your computer again in normal mode, and set the options to the native resolution, refresh rate etc of the monitor. These should be listed in the specs that would come in the box with it (may be resolution: 1,680x1,050)

Baldur's Gate II Keeps crashing!

uninstall anything you dont need is a good start. If, when you have done this, it persists, then reinstall the game. If it still does it, check if all the system requirements match to the RECOMMENDED, NOT MINIMUM. Some games wont actually work on minimum. Plus, some games dont work on some operating systems.

Monitor

did some thing change your refresh rates in the display section of your settings for the monitors? also have you tried to hook up another computer to see if it will display on the monitor? if nothing displays on the monitor then the monitor is faulty. if another computer (even a laptop) can display on the monitor then the video is set to high for the monitor to understand it. to reset monitor refresh with out a screen that will work you need to get into safe mode and reset the display settings to 60 hz and only 800 x 600 for starters and increase them until you cannot get a signal. if you cannot do this then a service shop will be able to assist you
