The motor of your camera in the lens assembly is not working properly that why the error code is appearing...may be the motor is stuck up or the driver of the motor is busted...but there are times there a poor connection to the socket at the main board...;-)

Everthing seems to work, except the camera will not record.

Assume you have Sony DCR-HC20 camcorder and it does not show you live view to record, I hope camcorder is playing back old recorded tapes perfectly with good quality picture on its LCD.
If it is true then your camcorder has ccd imager chip failure and ccd imager needs to be replace to get live view in LCD monitor.
Qualified camera tech will replace ccd imager chip.
Thanks.

Lcd screen is blurry on my sony handycam dcr-hc20

This does not sound like a CCD problem yet, but a LCD problem. This would require you to replace the LCD screen. Sounds like the LCD inverter is shot. That is the power supply that is required to back light your LCD.

Before we blame that, you should make sure that all ribbon cables are secure and tight.

Good luck !

Sony DCR-HC20 displays E 61:10 in upper right corner, no zoom

I can simulate this fault E61:10 by pulling out the CCD ribbon cables. This is an error that is pointed to no signal from Camera CCD assembly. Very gently remove the screws for the LCD cover assembly and remove. If you look in the upper left corner you will notice a ribbon cable connection. There is one more connection that should be checked, and it is located in the top portion below the CCD assembly. Make sure that all ribbon cables are currently attached firmly. Take specail care in opening your camera.

Laptop not recognizing USB connection from HC20

I'm not sure why the camcorder is giving you an error message... but you should know that this "Burn VCD" thing is a pretty nasty hack from Sony.

This will only work in conjunction with the Sony "Picture Package" software.. you have to have that running and properly set up for the video transfer via USB to work. And if it does work, the quality will be horrible -- 1/4 the resolution of you DV images, and arguably worst than VHS tape.

For a real video transfer from any mini-DV camcorder, you need a Firewire connection (Sony calls this i.Link), and a video
capture utility (Windows Movie Maker will work, that's included with most versions of Windows these days). A good video package will allow you to convert the DV footage into DVD, which maintains the quality of the DV camcorder's native format.

Black and white playback with sony handycam dcr-hc20

There is no problem on your camera, DCR-HC19E is PAL system(European system) DCR-HC20 is NTSC(American system). Are you in US or Europe? I think your TV is NTSC, cause the tape recorded on DCR-HC19E you played has no color. To confirm, connect your HC20 to TV in camera mode, not recording yet, just look at the TV as your monitor, If its in color, no problem, just erase the old video recorded on the HC19E, but if its important to you, you can convert it to NTSC using a PC. thanks
