I burned a plastic cutting board on an old (at least 15 years GE self cleaning oven stove. The coils have -genuine calrod unit - in the center of each. I can't get all the plastic off the underside of the coil and my husband tried to burn it off and the fumes were horrible. Can you please tell me how to get all the plastic off. Thank you very much. Unlock GE JB550GJ - Manual Self-Clean Latch

Self cleaning programs break things 80% of the time. You should never ever use that cycle. 650'F is too brutal to elements, fans, latches and circuit boards that are above the oven. I have never known one with a manual latch.

You need a new stove or a GE Technician service call.

Even parts seem hard to come by if that model number is correct.

Oven will not get out of the self-cleaning mode

Ok, unplug the unit for 5 minutes to reset the main circuit board. if the error continues to plague the unit, replace the control board.

I have a GE self-cleaning radiant range about 13 years old. The self-cleaning feature doesn't work anymore. The latch doorlight, even though set correctly to the right, keeps flashing on and off and the...

It could be a micro switch in the latch mechanism not communicating properly with the display circuit board, or it could be the circuit board itself. The switch might cost 20 or 30 dollars, but the board could be hundreds. Kinda costly if you ask me...

Oven does not heat to proper temperature

1. Do both coils get red hot? Try with bake @ 400F, then with broil to be sure. I recently had a bad lower bake coil, but the oven got hot slowly since the broil top coil comes on periodically to even up the heat in the oven. Replacing the lower coil was easy, about a 15-min job, but I had to pre-tap the screw holes on the coil terminals since my oven had extremely short wires.

2. If the coils are ok, the problem may be with the thermocouple or control board.

Try removeing power too unit for a couple minutes. You can due this by turning off breaker. Sometimes this will reset board. If not, you may need an ERC board.
