Just tried to install on laptop running Windows 7. When I click on scanner I get the message "Unable to communicate with the Film Scanner". It is turned on and connected to computer. Is there a driver problem or..?

Try a connecting it to a different port on the computer. Make sure the computer can see a different device on that port, so you know the port is ok. Then try a different cable.
I was getting that same error message, every second time I tried to scan something. I had the scanner connected to a USB 3.0 jack. I switched to USB 2.0 jack, and the problem was solved.
The drivers it needs are in Windows\system32\drivers and include usbscan.sys and 2 others. I discovered that I had to run the device troubleshooter until it came across the single image scanner, I let it install drivers and then it worked with the primefilm software. That took hours, but the solution was to let Windows 7 64 bit do a troubleshoot on the hardware.
SCSI to USB converters are available, but I doubt they will be of much help for you, you'd still need a special driver for your scanner. Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate support "XP Mode", essentially a Windows XP environment running in a virtual machine. I'd try to get the SCSI interface card and scanner to run inside the VM as a workaround.
You can try using the software provided for Windows XP and run it in compatibility mode under Windows 7. Download it here
Before installing the software, right click the setup program > Properties > Compatibility > check mark Run this program in compatibility mode and then choose the OS you have downloaded the software driver for.
It should install and run fine.
I have a PrimeFilm 1800u. When I attempt to scan into a Roxio application, the program does not respond. The hardware and software are both installed. No problems scanning or communicating with this scanner before. Is there somethere there that has a soultionfor this problem ? Thanks
It would appear that DMC-FZ18 cannot reliably communicate with Windows XP. However if SD card is removed from camera and connected directly to computer there is no problem.
Delete the software.
restart computer
Come off line.
Disable the anti virus software
and fire wall.
Now reinstall the software.
Check out that is runs before reinstating A/V and firewall.
