the lid assembly is allowing water to leak out the lid comes down and it has to seal but after the machine is about 5 yrs old are so the rubber on the lid gets worn and allow water to leak out itr has to be changed the level of difficulty is high so you will need a tech
Check the drain hose where it leaves the machine, if the square section of it is not in the plastic housing it will cut on the cabinet, if this has happened replace the hose they are difficult to repair, Other possibilities, pump is leaking, and check that the inlet hoses are not leaking and have washers in every connection.
Fisher and Paykel design a air gap kit to prevent the water back flowing to the other while one is running. it really works and worth of your money.
You need to change the lid seal and a pair of actuators from the top drawer. Because of the leak then the floor switch activated not allowing a complete cycle. Need to dry out the wetness from the bottom housing of both top and lower drawers by pulling the tubes out and accessing from the left side with small tower until it completely dry. Here is a link to buy air gap kit

Mark, the "brown stuff" is a build up of old soap, dirt and often mildew. Yea, gross huh? The best way to get rid of it if you have a bad case (which sounds like you) is to remove the spin basket and actually clean all the crud out. Once it has been cleaned then you should do at least 1 load of wash a week on HOT and it helps keep the gunk away. Some places offer products that are supposed to remove the gunk but I have yet to find one that does. The brown stuff is not related to a bad seal on the shaft. Good luck!
