From what I can understand, your problem is: 1. either a single horizontal line (from left to right), very bright, no picture but with sound, if yes then it is a failure of the vertical section. More often, it is the vertical IC that is at fault, sometimes the vertical capacitor. Still, in other cases, it is a case of cold solder; or 2. multiple lines across the screen with the picture overly bright and with sound. If yes to this one, then it is a matter of excessive screen voltage. This is adjustable using the HV Screen control that is at the rear of the Flyback Transformer.
Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

How do you set up tv to play with a DVD or external player? We have tried plugging it into the ports on the front of the TV but we can't figure out how to switch the tv to that input.
