Canon PowerShot A480 unaccessable.

I have a brand new Canon PowerShot A480. I have installed the programs from the disc and set about trying to access the camera to no avail. I can open ZoomBrowser perfectly fine, but CameraWindowDC will not open. Trying to update drivers gives me a 'data is invalid' message. I also can't see the camera as a separate item. Its not my USB port as I can successfully use that for a [Sony] handycam, mobile and iPod. I installed exactly the same software on a friends computer and everything worked fine, so its not a faulty installation disc as Canon tried to tell me.

I'm running a legal copy of XP Professional

Whenever I put new batteries into my Canon Powershot A480, I get the same thing - I get the 'Low Battery' red flashing light. And Then as I go to take a picture it shuts off and says ; Change The Batties....

I've got the same problem with 2 A 480 canon. I put in NiMH batteries and they work fine. If you put in slightly drained used batteries they work!! Nimh batteries are 1.2 volts and Alkaline are 1.5 volts. There is definitly a problem with this camera. I measured the voltages of brand new batteries 1.51 volts each and they didn't work. I put in some old batteries 1.4 and 1.42 volts and they worked fine.

Select the self-timer (the 10 inside a clockface).

Press FuncSet.

This sets the self-timer. Press the shutter halfway to focus, and fully to take the shot.
