Congratulation on your Passport.
Use the USB cable that came with it to connect it to the computer.
The computer should recognize it.
Open the file explorer to see the My computer. The drive should appear there, along with the C: drive.
Click on the Passport icon and look for an executable file WD-Synch or something similar. Click the executable and you will set it up.
If you do not want to use the synchronizing and other software that came with it, just use the drive as storage space.

If the drive seems not to be working, and if it came with a power adapter, then it should be plugged in. Usually the USB port of the computer supplies the necessary power, but sometimes that is not enough and certain drives have a power adapter.

Before removing the drive you should use the Safely Remove Hardware program.

WD Passport 500GB will not work with USB adapter. while it works with direct connection to USB. Any suggestions Please? Macbook Air.

Some USB adapters don't have enough power to run larger items like a portable hard drive. If it is a 4-port adapter or similar and does not have its own power supply, it is not likely to be compatible with a portable hard drive that doesn't have its own power supply, which the WD Passport does not. Unfortunately, there's no solution to this except to plug it in directly.

1 If the warranty is valid> get another drive and install it according to the instruction set. the hassle is better than trying to fix what is broken or defective without the tools to do so.

My computer wont recognize the drive or allow me to reformat my passport.

Try downloading the device driver from western digital site for your respective OS. And try formatting it with the western digital inbuilt software, which works great.

Harddrive not being acknowledged by laptop

This is a hard one, as 7 is so new. But it sounds like the very next thing to do is to plug the drive into another computer to see if the drive is working properly. If it works well, make sure that your drive is not trying to grab a drive letter that is already being used by another device. Do a search on the MS website for known issues and instructions on how to check for drive letter management issues. Good luck.
