In a lot of cases they are setup to find wireless signals automatically. If you are in a place with a wifi, you should see an icon in the bottom right of the screen. If you click on that it should show you what networks are available and if they are unsecured, which most motels are, you can click on "connect" and that should do it. If you go on as "public" it protects you a little better. Make sure you always update your virus software when roaming.
Wireless networks, especially HotSpot wireless networks are fairly simple to deal with, provide you have the hardware and drivers installed.
If you have a wireless network connection installed you will have these elements on your Windows XP screen at the bottom right corner:
The Monitor with little waves and a red X over it is the Wireless Network Status indicator. Alternately if you don't see that, "Explore" to a place called Network Connections and you'll see what you have available like this :
From here you can access the "Available Wireless Networks" in range also, look for menu items that say "View Available Networks" and follow it. Right clicking on the Wireless Nei just got a HP Pavilion dv4000 what will i need - 8418691.jpgator also brings up the menu:
Insii just got a HP Pavilion dv4000 what will i need - 937a185.jpgu is a Dialogue Box that allows you to choose a wireless network to connect to :
Your Local HotSpot's Access Point should be listed in the available networks, often unsecured for hotels and airports, coffee shops often have a temporary "name and password key" that allows you a limited time access.
That's the basics of connecting up to a wireless with XP, hope this helps.
Cheers.
PS: If you don't have the Wireless Network icon in Network Connections, you will need to buy a
Wireless network USB Dongle, or a
Wireless PCMCIA card.
Good Luck.
Hello rt452,
There should be a CD or DVD driver for your HP
laptop. Insert the CD or DVD. You should be prompted to install the
drivers, be it the sound card or network card.
Once you have it installed, just go to an area with a wireless connection & you should be all set.
You can also click on the Start menu button or the Windows logo on the bottom left hand side, click on Control Panel.
You can choose Network & Internet or Network & Sharing Center.
On
the upper left hand side, find Manage Network Connections. There should
be a wireless icon, right click on it & choose status or you can
view available wireless network.
Hope that helps.
Yours truly,
Art Pena
