My Franklin NIV has broken letters on the screen. There are lines going through the word,both horizontally and vertically. I put new batteries in but it did not resolve the problem.
not sure if you have checked this or not but on most electronics of this type there is typically a contrast control. It can be as simple as adjusting the contrast on the display.

Not good. You may have a tab failure. A repair shop may be able to diagnose and repair this, but most likely the lcd panel is broken. The panel is the most expensive part of flat tv's. A new panel will cost more than a used tv.

Simple. Hold the niv device in your right hand. Stand up. Walk to the nearest garbage can. Drop the niv into the garbage can. Take the garbage to the curb. Go to eBay and purchase a real Bible, the Franklin KJB-640, the actual Word of God, AKA, The King James Bible. Best electronic Bible ever made.
Your problem is more importantly that you should never read the words of men, as in the niv, but always only read the Word of God as in the Authorized Version, AKA the King James Version, not to be confused with the so called new king james version. Only the Word of God can bring you to Jesus. I have no idea where the words of men will take you.
More than likely you will need to replace the display screen. Those lines are a symptom of the LCD screen going bad. If you are still under warranty, see if you can get it replaced
If not, a new LCD screen runs about 15 dollars shipped from eBay and is pretty easy to replace.
