Planetary fell out while mixing bread dough on KP2671XER. How do you re-install planetary? Is this just a friction fit? Cannot find any screws or pins.

The parts list does not really help to show how the planetary is installed. Again, it does not show what holds it in place. Please elaborate.

  • glenntheham Oct 20, 2009

Yes, the whole planetary assembly fell out. I do not know why it fell out. I simply want to know if just slipping it back in was the correct thing to do, or if there is something else that needs to be done. Is there a service manual available for this mixer?

    Thanks

  • glenntheham Oct 20, 2009

Are we talking about the right mixer? The KP2671 does not have a drain plug, and I can't see where it can hold oil because of the planetary assembly design.

  • glenntheham Oct 20, 2009

    Hi,

Sorry to be so persistent, but the manual from mendingshed is for another mixer, and the other link is a parts list, which I already have. Is there a service manual for KP2671? I'm starting to think that there is not one, since I did my own searches.

I am starting to get the feeling that the planetary assembly falls out after a while, and it just has to be replaced, unless it happens too frequently, but I thought looking at a service manual would verify this.

    Thanks

The planetary gear is part of an assembly that includes the washer, fiber washer, pinion gear, retainer clip, agitator shaft and the retaining pin. I am assuming that it was the whole planetary gear assembly that fell out. Since I'm not sure exactly what caused this to happen I am unable to give you a solution to prevent this again unless you can provide more details on anything else that may have came out. I can provide you with a diagram for your mixer.

If not please let me know and add anything more specific about this.
I hope this helps.

Sorry I did not respond sooner however this is locked by another expert. Since I started this and I am unsure as to whether you have a solution I will try and answer your question.
First I only included the diagram to provide a common reference and aid in assisting you. It's sometimes difficult to convey an accurate explanation with out this. I have also included a second exploded parts diagram. Although this is not a Kitchen Aid diagram they are not the original manufactures of it, Whirlpool is. So this should be the same as your model with only cosmetic differences. Plus this diagram is a much more detailed image.

As I originally stated the planetary gear is part of an assembly and I was unsure as to how much of it came out. After reviewing your latest comments I see that it's the entire assembly.

To remove the planetary gear assembly you need to remove both the dowel pin (part #9), and the retaining clip (part #7). The dowel pin is used to lock both gears #10 an #8 in place. The retaining clip is used to hold the primary shaft in place.

In the sub assemble (lower right hand corner) there is also a dowel pin (part #9), and a retaining clip (part #30) that locks the planetary gear in place on the shaft and holds the shaft up in place. Again these would both have to be removed for it to come out.

Looking through the other comments I noticed a reference to an oil drain. The transmission does require grease but not oil.

I realize that there may still be a misunderstanding regarding exactly what you are referring to however please use the second diagram and label all the parts that came out if there are not part of the assembly I pointed out. Also if this is not your model please let me know that too and I'll try my best to help. Thank you.

the oil in the planettery system got over so it got dryed out and fell down.may be its craxcked and needs replacement.its actually fitted with internal gears.just check out winding it in reverse position.if not possible then it needs to be replaced order the required part from kitchen aid service center.as this part is not available outside.

LUBRICATION
Planetary
The planetary oil should be checked periodically. To check, DISCONNECT ELECTRICAL
POWER SUPPLY and remove the Drip Cup-Splash Guard. Oil should be even with the
bottom of the fill plug hole. If it is not, slowly add the recommended planetary lubricant
until it is. Replace the fill plug and the Drip Cup- Splash Guard.
A Drain Plug is located on the bottom of the planetary. Should draining become
necessary, remove the Drip Cup- Splash Guard and place a suitable catch pan under the
draining plug. Remove the drain plug, allow oil to completely drain, and replace the
drain plug. Remove the fill plug and pour in six fluid ounces of the recommended
planetary lubricant. Replace the Fill Plug and the Drip Cup-Splash Guard. Contact
Planetary Seal
Occasionally, the planetary seal may become dry and begin to squeak. To correct this,
work a little lubrication under the lip of the seal.
Transmission
The transmission oil should be even with the line on the Oil Level Gauge when the
motor is NOT running. If the oil falls below this line, DISCONNECT ELECTRICAL POWER
SUPPLY and remove the Top Cover, which is secured by two screws. Remove the
Transmission Fill Plug and add a small amount of the recommended transmission oil
until it returns to the proper level.
DO NOT overfill the transmission as leakage may result.

This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.

Hi,
Here is my opinion:

It may be as simple to install the planetary, attacht the hub and tighten the bolds,

You may also have bad bearings in the shaft portion of the planetary ( the shaft your attachments go onto) allowing the shaft to "wobble" a little bit causing a slight misalignment as the smaller gear goes around while mixing causing slipping of the planetary..

Here is the link containing the brakdown parts of your device, just refer the brakdown of the planteray before you install.

The rotating head on the mixer keeps falling off. how do you get it to stay on? it comes off when were mixing.

The Planetary plate comes attached to the shaft from the factory. It is not supposed to get
loose and come apart but it often does due to the mixer's vibrations and the user's constant
attaching and removals of the flat beater, wire whip or dough hook onto the beater shaft.
Try to remove the Planetary plate first : Gently rock it from side to side while pulling on it
to separate from the shaft. Notice the groves on both the shaft and inside the planetary
housing. That is how they are attached to one another at the factory (just friction, no screws
or pins). Now for a permanent solution:
Take a trip to Home Depot or Ace hardware and buy the J-B Industro Weld Compound
(Not the 5 minute type). Mix an equal amount from both tubes (Black and Red). Use a Q-Tip
and apply a thin layer of the mixture on both the shaft (grooved section) and inside the
planetary housing. Now re-attach the planetary plate to the shaft. Use a long strip of duct tape
to hold the plate in place (to prevent it from falling back out). Allow the epoxy to dry overnight
or at least for 8 hours.
The Planetary assembly is now permanently attached to the shaft of the mixer.

Planetary housing fell off

BRUCE, sorry for the initial solution... I had a total brain cramp of what you were describing and after reflecting on your original problem and then seeing your second entry realized what happened. You are absolutely correct that the planetary shaft is press fit onto the planetary housing. For whatever reason, I overlooked that.
I cannot explain why it the housing came of the shaft, but suspect that vibrations during its use caused the fitting to loosen and the planetary housing to fall off.
You have two options. Option #1) Purchase a new planetary assembly that includes the agitator shaft, which will run between $35~$57, plus S&H depending on the vendor or Option #2) try to reattach the planetary housing back onto planetary shaft. (BTW, if you reorder the planetary use the part number from your Parts List manual for your particular color and model, not the 9078036 number you found on the housing)
I suspect the planetary housing’s spline well has already been weakened and there may be micro-cracking which is not clearly evident so the refitting may or may not work. Of course it may be worth trying and fit back together without any problems.
Since it will be difficult to get good mechanical advantage by hitting the planetary housing back onto the planetary shaft while the mixer is upright, you will need to remove the planetary shaft from the transmission housing before you attempt to hammer the shaft back onto the planetary housing.
If you attempt to refit the planetary shaft back to its housing, place the housing on a piece of soft wood to protect the enamel paint before you start to hammer the shaft. Also use a piece of wood on the top of the shaft so you don’t accidentally damage the top of the shaft with your hammer. Good luck. I hope this solution was more helpful than my first one. – hslincoln, Burke, VA -

Hobart N-50 Mixer beater attachment spins but has no resistance

Sounds like the shear pin on the planetary shaft has sheared off. Has the mixer been subjected to a heavy load. Remove the planetary and see if the shear pin is intact otherwise you may have to open up the transmission.

Kitchen Aid Mixer has a sound but it doesn't have power to mix

Hi. Goto www.mendingshed.com and download the free Kitchenaid Service Manual.

You may have overloaded the mixer with bread or cookie dough, causing internal damage to the gears.

If you plan to do the repair yourself, you might also consider removing the old grease and oil. Remove, clean and regrease the planetary gear assembly as well. This will add years of life to your mixer.

Regrease with Chevron FM ALC EP-2 product.

If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45

it sounds like you may have a sheared key on one of the shafts.with no product in the mixer will it run in any other speeds?when mixing pizza dough you should only use 1st gear.if it does run in other speeds you have a sheared key or broken shaft,if it doesnt run in any speeds drop the planetary and check the key on that shaft.
