TI-84 silver: Black arrow instead of line in function mode

Somebody else posted a similar question, but the answer didn't work for me. In function graphing mode, I see an arrow (actually a black rightward facing triangle, with a black vertical bar to its right) to the left of "Y=". When I select the arrow and use ENTER to cycle through the line modes, it doesn't show me the normal options (regular line, thick line, etc.). Instead, I get the arrow, then the black triangle alone, then the black triangle with a "shadow" (dotted greater-than sign to the right of the triangle). Just those three options -- no ordinary line.

One symptom is that when I graph a function with disconnected asymptotes (e.g., 1/(x-2)), the graph connects the two asymptotes.

Any ideas?

Hello,
I have answered this question multiple times. I have no idea why you calculator refuses to allow you to choose more graph styles. Maybe you should reset it by clearing the RAM.
Concerning the connected asymptotes.
In truth your function has one aymptote namely the straight line x=2 but your graph has two asymptotic branches, one tends towards -infinity, the other toward + infinity. That they seem connected is an illusion due to the finite resolution of the screen. This is made worse if you select a connected graph instead of a dotted one. I am enclosing a screen capture of the graph for the same function, drawn on a calculator with better resolution.

This clarification being given, it remains that you still have a problem since you cannot choose other styles. Do try to reset the RAM, and choose dotted graphs. If that does not work, maybe you should update the OS or reinstall it from education.ti.com.
I hope it solves your problem. If it does not, do not blame me, and remember that I tried my best.

Make sure you have the proper angular mode set. The TI-84 can work with degrees or radians.

Press MODE to bring up the mode screen. Use the arrow keys to highlight either "Radian" or "Degree" on the third line and press ENTER. Press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode screen.

If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post giving an example of a calculation and the answer you're getting from the calculator.

If you don't have version 2.53MP of the operating system on the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, you can download it from
http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/US/productDetail/us_os_84plus.html

You can check the version of the operating system by pressing 2ND [MEM] 1. The OS version number is on the second line.

Once you're running OS 2.53MP, press MODE to enter the mode editor. Press down-arrow repeatedly to get to the second page. On the top line, highlight MATHPRINT. Press ENTER to select it, then press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode editor.

On the school-provided TI-84 Plus Silver Edition calculators, when one enters a math problem or equation which would take more than one line, the characters wrap to the next line. However, I have just...

You need to change the mode from Math Print to Classic Mode to get the multiple line display. Press Mode to open the correct menu. Use the up/down arrows to make sure that an item in the first line is highlighted (MathPrint or Classic). Use the left/right arrows to select Classic. Press Enter. If you see a line labeled Save, use the down arrow to highlight the line and press Enter again.

This is briefly shown in the manual. See page 9 (page 16 of the PDF) for the menu that applies. The section is labeled Setting the Clock. The rest of the details on changing modes is on page 15 (page 22 of the PDF). Texas Instruments has the manual for the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition in their support section. I hope this helps.

Press MODE to bring up the mode screen. Use the arrow keys to highlight "NORMAL" on the top line and press ENTER. Highlight "FLOAT" on the second line and press ENTER. Press 2ND [QUIT] to exit the mode screen. Now you will see full precision on subsequent calculations, though the TI-84 will still suppress trailing zeroes.

I am doing math, and would like to know how to change the mode of the Sine, Cosine, and Tangent buttons, along with their secondary buttons.

I am not sure what you mean. The only "mode" I can think of as regards these functions (trigonometric and inverse trigonometric) is the angle unit.
  • Press [MODE] key.
  • In Mode set up screen, use arrow keys to move highlight to degree or radian (whichever unit your problem requires).
  • Use the arrows to move cursor to 3rd line to highlight {degree} and press [ENTER] or radian and [ENTER].
  • Here is a screen capture (Do not worry if you do not have exactly the same screen as in the screen picture)
