Plug in ONLY the regular wired speakers and ONLY to the green port on the back.

Make sure they are powered up and the volume is about half way.

Ok now you need to call up ether the sound card application or preferably the windows volume control from the bottom toolbar.

Click Open Volume Control.

A box with sliders in should appear. make sure that volume control, wave, sw synth, aux, cd player, line in
are all about half way and that none of them have ticks in the box at the bottom.

If any of those are missing click options then properties from the top left and put a tick besides any that were missing (nothing else)
Now close the slider box.

Put a normal music cd in your cd/dvd player on the computer and set it to play with windows media player.
You should now have sound out of the speakers.

Double check that EVERYTHING is ok.
If there is still no sound check the control panle for any hardware issues and rectify those

Try headphones. If there is no static in the headphones it is the speakers.

Internal Speaker not working properly suddenly. Hearing Ruptures along the voice.

If you have been using your computer with the audio on full you will probably have blown the speaker cones. An easy fix. Add some external speakers.

The sound will not work on my Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. I've checked all the settings, volume, and unmute. I know it's old, but...it's all I have! :0)

Go to control panel, then choose system, hardware ,device manager and look for yellow flagged items. scroll down to sound, video, and game controllers. click on audio and update device drive. Also you may copy service tag # down and the go to www.support.dell.com . Under support and drivers there will be a place to enter the service tag. Then you should be able to see a list of updated drivers for that model. You may choose optional, recommended & urgent and they will be displayed. If you attempt to install them be sure to read about the proper order in which Dell recommends that you install them. I recently updated a Inspiron 5100. This model has an updated bios that needs to be flashed ,if yours has not been already. If you arent comfortable doing this, I would highly advise you to have someone with the knowledge on flashing the bios,do it for you. If you have a good understanding of it, there is detailed info on that site.

Dell Inspiron 5150 not playing sound

Your speakers are frying, hence the crackling sound, as this is a frequent problem owing to the location of the speaker assemblies and the sound output in an area of the system where the ambient heat exhaust vents are located.

I am a bit confused, though, as to why you get no better sound through headphones or external speakers, since this is not usually the case in this frequently cited problem.

One possibility is that not only are the speakers, but the entire sound output assembly.

Warrantee work if available, if not try a shop where they also sell used Dell computers as they will have pulls that could cut your losses.

The static noise may be a defect. If your laptop is still under warrent, contact dell for a warrenty replacement. I had the same problem with my inspirion. Sigmatel
