Question about Dell Inspiron 9100 Notebook
My laptop computer screen has horizontal white lines running across and there is sort of a flickering action at the very top of the screen. Thought it was a virus because when the problem first began, I would run different virus software and the screen would clear up. But now, that does not work and the flickering white lines are still on the screen. Please help!!!!
Horizontal lines on bottom third of my Toshiba (Satellite Pro) Laptop with XP windows got fixed by flicking my finger on the laptop screen! Was it a loose connection? I don't know. Change of screen resolution did not help, Rebooting, did not help nor restoring to prior dates. Thank you guys.

i did that for about a month. then it started getting worse. sometimes have to squeeze screen. bounce laptop on lap. or log off then back on. like i said, tapping back of laptop screen worked for a few months then decided it wouldn't. trying to find solution. changed resolutions, checked drivers, etc. nothing

Ive encountered laptop screens that are bad, with broken connections or a small carack on the very edge of the screen. I have an old laptop with the very bottom line of pixels dead. But as i push on the edge of the screen they flicker. Try carefully squeezing around the edge of your laptop screen near the lines. Its possible the screen itself is defective and need replacing.

I have horizontal lines everywere on my laptop it stops me from doing stuff like internet and everything i rlly need help is it VIRUS what should i DO ??? my laptop is like 1 year i bearly use it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if i have to change the screen that will cost me 500$$ whats the PROBLEM here

I have the same problem of horizontal white lines running across the bottom half of the screen. This has got progressively worse over the last three weeks. I have sent the laptop to HP under the one year warranty and they have advised that I must have damaged the screen because it is cracked, and it is therefore not covered by the warranty. The unit has not been dropped and the problem occured when using it normally. So any ideas what has caused this?

Have you tried changing display options? Right click anywhere on the desktop, choose Properties and then the Settings tab. Try 800 x 600 for a big resolution and then go smaller from there. Also from the same Settings tab click the Advanced button and try different refresh rates. It sounds like a hardware problem but the connection to the possible virus is interesting. You might also check for new video drivers on the manufacturer's website. AVG has a great free anti-virus that I use on all my systems, a 2nd opinion never hurts!

Try plugging an external monitor and toggle the screen with ALT+F5. Any software problem or virus should be reproduced in the new screen.
If the image is good in the external monitor you probably have a problem in the LCD screen or cabling. You can get a replacement screen here:

I have the same Horizontal line, about 3 inches from the bottom of my LCD. I tried pressing the edge of the line and it flickered, pressed all edges including the bottom of the LCD and the line dissappeared. Thanks for all your suggestions.

I have a Toshiba Satellite which had horizontal lines on the bottom half of the screen. I took the advice about pressing the edges and it worked. I was about to but another screen which cost $100. Thanks for the advice. Saved me 100 bucks.

On a lot of these LCDs, the connection to the screen itself from the harness is the culprit. If the screen is cracked, there is no saving it, not even by talented MacGyver types. But if you notice that when you disconnect this harness and reconnect it and the screen works (remember - power down, piddle, assemble, then power up), probably the best thing is to use some contact grease on these connectors. This grease keeps oxidation from occuring by an electrolysis reaction from two slightly dissimilar metals and by just atmospheric moisture. IMPORTANT: Use only a smathering of the stuff on both the contacts and the contactees. That is, get your fingertip damp with the stuff and rub some on the contacts. It doesn't take much. Contact is made in an atmosphere now created by the grease.
This is true for any contact in a computer or notebook on most any part of the circuit that has gang plugs or post plugs. Manufacturers don't usually use this stuff (except maybe on smallish displays like calculator displays that use the little rubber and wire loop blocks to make the connection) because they've found that satisfactory performance is obtained from dry contacts. (It costs them the labor of an additional step to put the grease there, so they would rather not do it.)
You can get this grease at any electronics supply house or your local Radio Shack. (Bonus tip: Works on car batteries too!! Pull terminals all the way off and grease the posts [or contact face for side posts].)

The same thing is happening to me, but i also have orange vertical lines running through the screen. originally, there was one line total, but now there are 8 in all. ive plugged my laptop (Dell Latitude D820) into my tv and the lines are gone. sometimes the whole screen starts rapidly blinking white. this hs happened when it was plugged into my tv, and the tv screen was normal and i could still control everything normally, all the while the laptop screen was having a laptop seizure.

I accidentally poured some water on my screen and i started the rubbing thingy with both of my thumbs, i tried harder and harder(really hard) but still its size has only decreased apart from that its the same help pleaseee :'(

I hav a sony vio PCG-K37 I have a white line about 1/5th from the top of screen that will not leave on black screen as well changed resolution of screen and it is still there. Terry
It may be bad contact in the monitor connectors with motherboard. Maybe you drop your computer or just because of water in it or humidity.
