go step by step to find the fault.
check antenna connection behind the radio
check roof aerial and wire connection underneath it.
Take an old radio's antenna and connect it to your car's radio antenna input and check whether your car radio is working properly.
One of the problems with AM reception iam afraid but here i suspect that the aerial mounting isnt earthing properly thus causing the AM reception to be susceptable to interference
If you used the 2 plug nissan radio harness, there should be a blue wire on there which is the (power antenna) even if your car doesn't have a power antenna, this wire needs to be connect to power on the am/fm amplified ant which is used in many nissan cars.
if the jensen has a blue or a blue/white wire, connect it to one of those. if not, you can always connect it to the red ACC wire. that should solve your reception problem..
The signal from the broadcaster is important of course... but so is EFI (interference). If you have any of those cigar-plug-USB chargers or such plugged in or anything plugged into your cigar jack, remove them and see if that makes any difference.
The ignition system may be causing some of the noise, to find out, compare the AM reception with the car on to when it is off. If the reception is better while it's off, then that's a good clue.
If there is something causing interference while the car is running, does it get worse as the car is going faster? If so, especially if it's a whining noise then you may need to check the suppressor wire on your alternator.
You mentioned that you replaced the antenna... did that replacement include the wiring and cleaning the mount point? If not, those are two more things to look at.
Possible solution. I have fixed two with this problem. When the radio drops to a hard surface, the ferrite coil antenna is the heaviest component on circuit board. Look for cracks in solder or broken wires where attachments to circuit board occurs for this component. Use a fine point soldering iron with low heat.
