RCA HD50LPW42. Sound so loud it sounds like a jet engine coming from TV (very loud whining sound). I assume this is my color-wheel, but I'm not sure.Turns off when TV turns off.

You need a replacement color wheel or have yours rebuilt since the RCA color wheels are on nationwide back order. You can get your wheel rebuilt at the following link http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/

Hi, You may have two problems with your TV. This TV has a history of a color wheel issue, was making grinding noise? Have you ever changed the lamp? It may be a bad color wheel and the lamp, you may want to do a visual inspection. It is easy to replace the lamp but more likely the color wheel is the problem. The part# for the color wheel is 212184, the part# for the lamp is 260962
Most DLP TVs have a color wheel. This allows the TV to be manufactured with a single chip to control the color for each spot on the screen and a white light source. As the wheel rotates, the desired color light gets transmitted to the screen. This happens so fast that most people do not see the screen refreshing each color.
Usually the symptom of a failing color wheel is the TV being very noisy on startup (a whining sound) followed by it shutting down. Although other problems can be involved - for example a power problem going into the assembly with the wheel (there is a motor that turns the wheel).
No,this tv have a colors wheel,it dead. The tv turn black&white, make loud grinding sound, make loud noises like a motor. All indication the colors wheel is spinning off of it axis motor and not functioning anymore.Hire a tv tech.to replaced the colors wheel, very difficult to replaced, many machanicals parts to take out, before even can see the colors wheel to replaced.
To install the color wheel, turn off and unplug the tv, take off the lower back casing (17 star type screws), remove the lamp door, remove the lower back casing. Look just left of the lamp you will see 3 smaller star type screws near a small circuit board (which is on the color wheel), remove those screws unplug cable from color wheel, unplug other end of 2nd cable from tv circuit board (just to the upper left nearest to the color wheel.
All you have to do is install the color wheel, plug in both cables, put the back on and place the lamp door back in its position, the lamp door pushes in a lillte blue lever which allows the lamp bulb to light up.
I'm in the process of doing the same myself on my RCA same model. Where did you buy the color wheel from?
The color wheel can make a whinning sound for sure, However it should not continue to whine after shutting it off. That sounds more like the fan used to cool the lamp, as that will continue to run after the set is shut off. How soon does the whinning start when you push power? Let me know I should be able to help you out. DLPs are my specialty
