I was pulling my buddys bike back to camp on my 05 honda 400ex and it died on me , i cant get it to start i replaced spark plug just cant get it to fire, what could it be?
Does the new plug spark outside of the engine? Put the base on an unpainted part of the engine with the plug wire on and kick it through a few times. Does this engine require a battery to run or is it a self-contained ignition system? Remove the fuel tank and check for loose wires or other parts. If it requires a battery, check the connections at the battery for corrosion or looseness. Is the battery charged?
Have never heard of a relay of any kind on a Honda except for the starter solenoid (it's a kind of relay). Lights, horn, and turn signals are controlled directly by switches. Do they work? Does the spark plug spark? Is this a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine? When it quit, did it just go dead, or sputter to a stop? A sudden stop suggests a wire either shorting out or plug connection coming loose. Pull the headlight rim and light. Check the wiring and connections in the shell--all of the handlebar switches and buttons, plus the ignition switch if it is mounted in the shell are connected into the main wiring harness there. Wire colors are maintained through each connector.
