The laser lens is dirty. It is trying to read read read and it can't.

What do i need to do to get this dvd to play? what buttons do i press and in what sequence?

Put in a disk, press the dvd button, and play. Then put the TV on the correct input that the dvd is hooked to. Normally input Video 1 or 2 if using red-white-yellow cables. Channel 3 or 4 if using a Coax cable.

Emerson ewd2203 dvd/vcr combo

you're not telling much besides the fact that it doe'snt work. One thing to try offcourse is cleaning the lense inside, remove cover and gently brush dust off etc. If there's no dust build up, then I guess its just another emerson gone bad, NOT a rare occasion. Use the warranty if valid, otherwise consider if the repair cost is worth it, or if you rather getting another DVD player that you can count on. Good luck
