Re: emerson ewd2203 dvd/vcr combo
You're not telling much besides the fact that it doe'snt work.
One thing to try offcourse is cleaning the lense inside, remove cover and gently brush dust off etc.
If there's no dust build up, then I guess its just another emerson gone bad, NOT a rare occasion.
Use the warranty if valid, otherwise consider if the repair cost is worth it, or if you rather getting another DVD player that you can count on.

OK, first go through these steps:
(if they doesn't work, then you have to say good bye to the combo.
1.) check if your DVDs aren't scratched (very common)
2.) check if your DVDs aren't dirty (eg. somebody held it in his hands after he ate a juicy marmelade bread)
3.) Try to clean the head (lens) of your DVD player with a cleaning DVD (at least 5 times).
If you mean record from one tape to another, you'll need two VCR -
outout from first with the tape you want to play to the input of the seocnd with a tape to record.
Hit play on the first one and record on the second and off you go.
Do you know why the tape was stuck? How did you get it out? On most vcr's there's a mode switch connected to the mechanics of the vcr. If the mode switch isn't in stop position, the unit will try to get it there and shut off if it can't. Bad belts, bad idler wheel, dirty mode switch, mechanical timing off (maybe due to forcing a stuck tape out?)... all these can cause this.
