The staplesare NOT loaded on top of the pull out shaft; they are inserted directlyinto the slot that opens when you pull the shaft out. If the nose ofthe tool is not placed firmly against a surface, it will not fire.

Here is a step by step:
Unplug the tool.
Squeeze the end of the shaft at the rear bottom of the tool and pullout the shaft.
Flip the tool over on it’s back.
Insert the staples,(points up) and then slide the shaft back in.
Plug it in, press the on button (under the the power cord in the back). Press the nose squarely against the material and press the trigger.

If you are trying to load staples into your Stanley TRE550 gun, you will need to use Arrow brand T50 staples. I spent many hours wrestling with the T20 to no avail. Once I used the T50 staples, loading the Stanley gun was a breeze!
