There is very little chance the gearbox will be affected. Remapping usually only affects the electronics for the ignition system. The actual gearbox is all mechanical so doesn't use electronics.
The Brother MFC J4710 takes the LC 103 series of cartridges and as this is a chipped cartridge it should see them when installed. There is always the potential for a poor connections between the cartridge and the printer in certain climates. Step one would be to buff the cartridge chips with a pencil eraser......gently!
If the cartridges are new OEM's this should fix the problem. If you are attempting to use refilled cartridges the cartridge chip must be reset to function correctly. If the re-filler didn't reset the chips get your money back and ask around for someone who has a re-setting device for these cartridges.
You probably have the one with the NVidia graphics chip don't you?
Reballing is probably your cheapest option to fix this actually. This problem tells me that your graphics chip (GPU) on your motherboard has gone bad possibly due to overheating. What is happening now is that some of the connection under the chip has separated, possibly some melted and touched each other causing a short of sorts.
So either reballing the chip or replace the motherboard is your only options to repair this laptop I'm afraid.
junems,
You can find a PDF manual for the LC-22DV200E [here], direct from Sharp's website.
This should provide you with the information you need to set it up.
Kind regards,

A 200-pin PC-3200 SODIMM should work in your machine but it will clock down to 333MHz. Your computer has 2 slots with a max of 512MB per slot (1GB total system memory). For maximum compatibility you should stick with a low density (16-chip - double-sided) PC2700 DDR-333 SODIMM with a CL of 2.5. Link below to see an example:
