First, I'm not a AMAZON Kindle Tech.
* If it is "Open" (unlocked) then charge it up using the micro USB slot.
* If you can turn it on and the main menu goes on. Swipe the "Padlock" icon to open. Then swipe from top to bottom to get the menu display (for Kindle fire), Paper white will need to press the mode button (only button on the face of pad)
* If this is still a registered device then the regular menu will pop up and you will need to access the device menu by swiping top of screen downward. Select "+More" which will pull up the "Settings" menu. Select "My Account". Select "Deregister" continue and set up your Amazon account.
* If you want to wipe everything and reset the kindle (as giving it away to someone else) then go to "Settings" menu and select "Device". Select "Reset to Factory Defaults" then follow instructions. This will wipe all data and your account info as well as emails, bank records, etc.
* Resetting the Kindle to factory will be the same as if you just bought it from the store. It will automatically go through the welcome screen and help you set up your kindle and give a short beginner's course.

Deregister Your Kindle Paperwhite
From your computer: Visit Manage Your Content and Devices. Select Your Devices. Select your device or app and select Deregister in the Actions column. ...
From your device: From Home, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings. Tap Registration.
Hello
Select "Register" and enter the same username and password of the Amazon.com account you were using on your old Kindle. Visit the "Manage Your Kindle" page on your computer's Web browser, and click the "Actions" button to the right of your previously purchased or downloaded Kindle content.
To transfer content from your computer to your Kindle, use the USB cable you received with your device.
1.Go to Manage Your Content and Devices.
2.Under Your Content, select the item that you want to transfer and click the Actions button next to the title.
3.From the pop-up window, click Download & transfer via USB.
always like to refer to Amazon help whenever possible. I copied their directions for this. Even if your's is not 5th gen it will work. You can also check specific info for your model by logging into Amazon.com Click help, then device help, click on you device and look through the info available.
Many issues with your Kindle, such as a frozen screen or issues with downloading content, can be solved by restarting your device. Help for Kindle Paperwhite (5th Generation).
Press and hold the Power button for seven seconds until the Power dialog box appears, and then tap Restart. Note: If the Power dialog box doesn't appear, press and hold the Power button for a full 40 seconds until your device restarts.
Try swiping your finger across the middle of the screen from right to left. This action turns the page forward. Swiping your finger across the middle of the page from left to right turns the pages backwards. I don't think the icon on the bottom is for page turning.
Contact Amazon help desk. Log on to Amazon; next to search bar is Your Account. Roll over and click on your account from the list. Next page on right side you will see kindle help home. Clich that and fill in info. They can answer back with email or by phone. The system routes questions to expert in the area needed.
