Have a look under the machine where the tub hose goes to the pump
the catcher is in that hose
the tub hose will go in the top and the pump hose in the side so that any items drop to the bottom and are not put through the pump impeller
Testimonial: "Hi Bill, thanks for the reply. I see the outlet hose from the pump, but no 'tub hose' or inlet hose. instead the water inlet to the impeller comes through a moulded casing at the bottom of the tub. The moulding is very narrow so that I can't reach far with my fingers. I can't feel any place a catcher might be. Is it possible to reach in from the other end, from inside the tub?"
oops, posted in the wrong place, sorry.

you can try removing the agitator but I fear that the ring may be past the pump
if you have the wash water going into a point in the washing ( laundry) tub then it may be in the "S" bend under that tub
you can check with a F&P service agent to see if there is a strainer under the agitator that would hold the object in the machine before you pull anything apart
