Seems like he may have pressed the source or input key on the remote however you can do this both ways to get things back in order by pressing the source or input key and the tv should turn back to the source you want (if however no signal still try going into the tv's menu and look for a dish icon (samsung tvs) and change it from air to cable or if cable to air) if the source isnt cable choose HDMI for your set top box (dish network direct TV or spectrum box)
AH! I have fixed a lot of remote controls in my career. I would suspect something may have got spilled onto the top of the remote and got inside under the front rubber like buttons you press.
You have a few clear choices here: find a tech or a shop who can take the remote apart(they can also test the remote) and clean it properly and put it back together.
I would do that before looking to buy another remote---if the side buttons work the set is ok--issue is with the remote.
