I have a brand new brother's serger 1034D.. Its new.. as in never been used but once but it's not in warranty. It's making a grinding noise. I've liked it and is clean. Any ideas what's wrong??

I have oiled it with new oil as the manual states. It hasn't sat around for years or any longer then one sits in a box on the shelf. I noticed it wasn't making this grinding noise the first time I used it, just now the second time. I have owned many machines in my lifetime. Never had a machine grind like this one. I also noticed that other people stated their exact serger is making grinding noises. Not sure if I can take the bottom off to oil other areas.

Most likely the internal mechanics need oil, not just what is specified in the manual. Machines (even brand new in a box) will dry out over time. If the grinding sounds serious, take it for service.

Could be that since it has set for years without use or maintenance, the old oil has dried out and the motor is straining to run the machine without sufficient lubrication. Trying to run the machine in its present condition could damage the motor. Your machine very likely just needs a thorough oiling (1-2 drops of fresh good quality serger oil) every place that metal rubs on metal. (Sergers usually take a lighter-weight clear oil--different from what sewing machines would use.) You should probably throw out the oil that came with the machine. It is probably old and should not be used in your machine.

A serger requires much more frequent oiling (the moving parts behind the front door, ie the looper mechanics, etc.) than a sewing machine. In addition, about every year I take the bottom off my serger and lube the moving metal parts inside with Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube. It has a whole different sound after getting some TLC!

To keep your serger operating for years, be sure to regularly clean and apply a couple drops of lube as recommended in the owner's manual (maintenance section).

I have a Brother 1034D serger that I just bought. I turned it on and tried to use it right out of the box. The motor goes but needles won't move. I tried rehtreading it with no luck

Um, I would return it immediately. If the needles do not move with or without thread, it is not a good thing. You machine is under warranty. Get it attended to right away.

Knocking sound on brother 1034d brother serger

Stop using the machine. If your loopers are out of adjustment you will break them and increase your service cost by 3 times.

in response to all serger, no, after my babylock serger is cleaned and serviced it runs quietly.
as for the brother, it's possible thats normal, try contacting a repair shop in your area and tell them about the serger and see what they say.
it's possible that the serger may need some type of adjustment
or a part may have broken .

Take it back. No new machine should make any noises like that. Exchange it for a better one.

Contact Brother. If this is a brand new Serger, it's under warranty. And they may have some info that will help!! Check your book there's a telephone number in there.
