Try this as a possible fix.
This trick can quickly fix many mysterious hardware failures

The other thing I've heard of happening is a few of the USB 3.0 ports having problems with USB 2.0 equipment. I know it should be back compatible, but Windows can have problems. Try another USB port to see if that helps.

Does the SeaGate cable have 1 or 2 connections to the computer? Unfortunately, most external hard drives need to connect to 2 USB ports to get enough power.

I just looked up this problem on Seagate's website, and they pretty much come up with the same answers. Uninstall and re-install the USB drivers with the SeaGate connected. Or use other USB ports. The other suggestions they have don't make sense, if you can't talk to the thing, how do you run Seatools or checkdisk?

Fixya doesn't allow me to put in another link at this point, so you'll have to copy and drop this into your address bar.

Here's another write-up on fixing the code 43, I wouldn't do number 6.Update BIOS though, USB is working fine with everything else, it's NOT the BIOS that's having a problem.

What is code 43

Code 43 Error Message

The Code 43 error is one of several Device Manager error codes. The Code 43 error will almost always display in the following way:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
Details on Device Manager error codes like Code 43 are available in the Device Status area in the device's properties: How To View a Device's Status in Device Manager.

Cause of the Code 43 Error

A Code 43 error is generated when Device Manager stops a hardware device because the hardware reported to Windows that it's having some kind of unspecified problem.
This extremely generic message could mean there's a true hardware issue or it could simply mean that there's a driver problem that Windows isn't seeing as such but that the hardware is being affected by.

Error Code 43 Troubleshooting

Restart your computer if you haven't done so already.

There is always the chance that the error Code 43 you're seeing on a device was caused by some temporary problem with the hardware. If so, a restart of your computer might fix the Code 43 error.

Note: Some users have also reported that powering off their computer completely (not just a reset) and then turning it back on has corrected their Code 43 issue, especially if it exists on a USB device. In the case of a laptop, turn it off and remove the battery, wait a few minutes, and then put the battery back in and start the computer.

Did you install a device or make a change in Device Manager just before the Code 43 error appeared? If so, it's very possible that the change you made caused the Code 43 error.

Undo the change if you can, restart your PC, and then check again for the Code 43 error.

Depending on the changes you made, some solutions might include:

Hi, Thanks for using fixya.

Remove any usb devices from your computer other than your Free agent then reboot the computer see if it is reconized and it is useable. Then plug in your other devices one at a time make sure you see the Your device is ready to use. If your Free Agent is not reconized got to Seagate.com search for your device driver. Remember when you want to pull out any usb device make sure you remove it throught windows first. Fastest way is to go in My Computer or Computer right click on the device and choose eject. After the name changes to removable device it is safe to pull our.

Hope this helps,

How do i find the files that have been saved on my seagate freeagant goflex desk 2TB drive

Hi there babyface,

You just have to plugin your Seagate FreeAgent to your computer's usb port using the usb cable. Once plugged in power the seagate on and your computer should pop up a notification, usually in the lower right corner of your computer screen, saying that it has detected a new USB device. Next, right click your Windows Start button and choose Explore to Open Windows Explorer. Once the window opens, look for the drive letter associated with your Seagate FreeAgent under "My Computer" or "Computer" located on the left pane. Click for that drive to show the contents on the right side of the window. Thats it!

If you need further assistance, please let me know. Thank you for using FixYa.

Installation issue - Not recognizing

hmm, no problem plugging in either side, just be sure to do the power cable first. What's doing the beep, beep?

Found a guy who had similar prob, here was his solution:
Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager.
Check to see if FreeAgent is shown as a disk drive.
If not, check the device list for any Free Agent device, double click and check driver. No driver installed? Update does not work? On the driver tab….click uninstall device.
Shut down computer. Unplug Free agent USB and power at the drive.
Reboot computer. As it is rebooting, plug in the power cord. Wait a minute or two….then plug in USB cord.

Windows will “found new device” ….. Just let the computer complete the reboot.
Then go to the device manager. Chances are you will find Free Agent in the drives….and in the USB list of devices. Open windows explorer….and you should see you Free Agent as a drive.
Windows will ask you to install manufacturer disk. You have no disk…non needed. Windows has installed the device. Just click on close. I you keep getting windows wants to install device…..ignore it. You can click on “don’t ask again”. (That is if your Free Agent drive is showing in the device manager as a disk…and in windows explorer….along with your other drive or drives.)
If at some later time….your Free Agent drive does not appear….repeat the steps as listed above.
(You may think it is not working….or that it has gone bad. Try this before you try to return.)
Seagate Tools…the new version….does not recognize to diagnose the Free Agent….
I have not tried Seagate Tools after getting the computer to recognize the drive.
I am surprised Seagate does not provide a Tool to recognize their own drives…and install and/or test Free Agent.

This does work for me with Vista. Thought I had lost the drive…. Seagate should provide a patch or a drive that Windows will recognize when you get the “found new hardware” and Windows asks you to insert manufacturer’s installation disk. I do not understand why that is not already there….a driver file for Free Agent...that Windows would install.

I did not buy Pro….because I did not need the backup software. I wonder if those who bought Pro are having these problems.
