SOURCE: my icons won't show up
Try right-clicking on the desktop screen > View and make sure that "Show Desktop Icons" is ticked.
SOURCE: Suddenly no icons show up
To enable those missing icons, right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Desktop tab and hit the Customize Desktop button. Next, under the General tab, check off any of the icons you want to appear on your desktop.
Once you do that, they will all be returned to your desktop in full view. You can choose from the icons of My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer. Now, on the other hand, you may want to take some of those icons off your desktop. If that's the case, just uncheck them and they will be out of your way.

Start by logging on as the Administrator so you can check the Task Manager and find out what Application or Process is monopolizing the system.
If the system is still unresponsive boot into Safe Mode. (Press F8 before the Windows startup screen appears.) If everything is fine in Safe Mode type MSCONFIG at the Command Prompt and start disabling features until you find the culprit.
Last resort, buy or borrow an external USB CD/DVD drive and use it to reinstall Windows.
Important: Reinstalling will ERASE the hard drive.
