Go to Change User on your log-on and select yourself. (The PC is probably loading the admin profile which doesn't have your icons.)

SOURCE: Suddenly no icons show up

To enable those missing icons, right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Desktop tab and hit the Customize Desktop button. Next, under the General tab, check off any of the icons you want to appear on your desktop.
Once you do that, they will all be returned to your desktop in full view. You can choose from the icons of My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer. Now, on the other hand, you may want to take some of those icons off your desktop. If that's the case, just uncheck them and they will be out of your way.

SOURCE: Acer Aspire One D250-1042 shows desktop wallpaper but won't load

Start by logging on as the Administrator so you can check the Task Manager and find out what Application or Process is monopolizing the system.

If the system is still unresponsive boot into Safe Mode. (Press F8 before the Windows startup screen appears.) If everything is fine in Safe Mode type MSCONFIG at the Command Prompt and start disabling features until you find the culprit.

Last resort, buy or borrow an external USB CD/DVD drive and use it to reinstall Windows.

Important: Reinstalling will ERASE the hard drive.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

SOURCE: no icons on desktop

try to start in safe mode As the PC start tap F8 until a menu appears then choose safe mode If that works you could try the following

  1. do a system restore to a date before you hade the problem start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore
  2. If that does not resolve the issue - try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 see if that fixes it- if it does - then we need to work out which startup file or process is causing the issue

HP pavillion dv9000 has black horizontal lines across screen and looks like a snowy background

Sounds like the screen is going bad. Isolate the problem by plugging an external monitor to the laptop. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker to plug to the laptop. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If the Borrowed monitor does not show the black lines and snowy background, that proves your video card is ok and the problem is your lcd screen. If the borrowed monitor shows the same black lines ans snowy background it means your video card inside the computer has the issue.

The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

When I turn the computor on the monitor is working okay. But as soon as I enter mt password, the monitor screen goes black but the icons are still clearly visible

the problem will mostly be a background desktop issue.change the desktop background and you should be having a normal screen again.

I have had the monitor plugged into my HP laptop. Suddenly, it showed a "Power Saving Mode" message on a blank screen. I have gone through my troubleshooting guide. The screen now shows my background...

Depending on which version of windows you have the directions may be slightly different but in the display settings check to see if it is set to extend the display or to duplicate the display both do very different things. Hopefully adjusting this will correct your issue.

How do i change the desktop background on my hp mini 110-116nr laptop?

You cannot change the wallpaper in starter edition. The feature is not included, it has been designed for entry level pc's only. Like everyone else is saying the tab is not there and when you right click on the image and click add as background it does not work. The most current and simplest ways is to select and right-click on the picture you wish to set as the background image. You can leave protected operating system files hidden to not have the desktop.ini files displayed, but leave system files unhidden to see the rest of them. First navigate to: %SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper. That's pretty much it, place your wallpapers there, create new folders etc, and they will show in the Windows Desktop Backgrounds menu in wallpaper selection

Hp laptop is has docking station connected to acer monitor. The acer monitor has the desktop background but does not show desktop icons. How do I get the icons to show on acer monitor

you will probably find that you have set the screens to run side by side, do a check by clicking the identify monitors, icons will be normaly on the left screen, check the dispay settings and you probably want to set the monitors so they both are showing the same screen at the same time.
good luck.

Can't Change the background of the screen

The Touch series uses the Touchflo userinterface on top of Windows Mobile and has it's own background-wallpaper setting. You probably changed the "normal" Windows mobile background picture, which is hidden "behind" the Touchflo interface.

To change the Touchflow wallpaper select the "Settings" icon in the scrollable bottombar (which leads to the Touchflow settings) instead of the "Start Menu | Settings" shortcut (that's the "normal" Windows mobile settings)
