What is the dependent variable, independent variable, the control group and experimental group?

A study was created to test the effects of fear in children. The hypothesis of th experimenters was that if babies were exposed to fuzzy bunnies and at the same time a loud cymbal was struck close behind them then the child would be afraid of all fuzzy things. Another group of children would be exposed to bunnies without no noises. What is the experimental group in science

For example, if they want to test a variable, the experimental group is given the variable and the control group does not get it. This way, the variable can be compared to a known reference.

What is an independent variable

A quantity that can vary independently on any other quantity in the situation being studied. When a independent variable changes it value, the value of the dependent variable changes in accordance with the rule that links the two variables. As a worker, you can decide of your own free will to work 10 hours or 40 hours per week (the number of hours worked is the independent variable). Depending on the course of action you choose (10 or 40, or 0 hours), your weekly salary will vary according to the pay-formula.
weekly salary =(number of hours worked in the week)* (hourly rate)+ some constant.

I am doing an experiment. i am using water. I am trying desolve salt, grits and pepper in water. would water be my independent variable and the salt, grits and pepper be my dependent variables?

Hey there,

Dependent variables are the output of certain actions or variations in the independent variables. In this case, the dependent variable would be the sludge you create. The water would be a constant medium to the independent variables grits, salt, and pepper

What is a dependent variable

When conducting an experiment, a researcher usually has a dependent and independent variable. The independent variable is the variable that can be changed or manipulated (think of it as a cause). The dependent variable is the variable that depends on the independent variable (think effect).

For example, if you wanted to test whether or not taking Advil affects the length of a headache:
  • Taking Advil (or not) is what you can manipulate. It is the independent variable.
  • Headache duration is the dependent variable. The results depend on whether or not Advil was taken.

I have a project and i don't know what independent or dependent means

When conducting an experiment, a researcher usually has a dependent and independent variable. The independent variable is the variable that can be changed or manipulated (think of it as a cause). The dependent variable is the variable that depends on the independent variable (think effect).

For example, if you wanted to test whether practice improves an athlete's performance (lets say number of touchdowns):
  • Practicing (or not) is what you can manipulate. It is the independent variable.
  • Number of touchdowns is the dependent variable. The results depend on whether or not the athlete practiced.

Examples of independent and dependent variable

hi.

for a full definition, try wikipedia.
an independent variable can be freely changed.
a dependent variable will BE changed as the independent variable is changed
basically there are 2 main examples. mathematical, and experimental.

with experiments,(science, chemistry etc.) one example would be changing the amount of fertilizer fed to a plant to see how it affects growth. there are 2 variables here. amount of fertilizer used and growth of the plant.
the amount of the fertilizer can be freely changed. (independent variable)
the amount of growth DEPENDS on the amount of fertilizer (dependent variable)

with maths, you can use something like 2x+5=y.
x can freely changed. it is the independent variable. y will change depending on the value of x.

hope this helps
