One of the suggestions I would have made has already been offered. Another would be the heads (contacts which if dirty could be telling the printer that a new cartridge is empty. That is quite likely if the printer has not been used in a while. You could try cleaning the head with a cotton swab dipped in either alcohol or electronic contact cleaner. The eec would probably be better to use as it is specifically intended for such use and won't "flash", but it is "pricey" and might also be difficult to find.
Another suggestion is to disconnect the printer from your computer completely, uninstall the software, reboot the computer, make a "mouse gesture", shut down the computer, and reboot a second time after reconnecting the printer. Presumably the OS will see the printer, prompt to reinstall the software. I have had multiple instances across multiple OS where this corrected a problem with a printer or other device not working properl

SOURCE: Epson Stylus CX5400 prints blank pages
I've had this happen twice with the CX5400. I've fixed it both times by following the instructions on this page: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html (This involves dissassembling your printer so it's not for the faint of heart!)
