Cd/dvd rom is not recognized on system. No drive letter or in device manager

Click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to cd/dvd rom drives right click properties then properties again then tick enable cd digital cd audio for this cd rom device also scroll to dvd regions select the no _ for your specific area
If this does not fix the problem you might try
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd-rom then plug them back in this should activate the found new hardware wizard
you might have to uninstall then restart your computer then reinstall your DVD/CD or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device

select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall

make sure that the cd rom is getting enough consistent power test all leads that are attached to the cd rom including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program

Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Your problem seems the device it not detected properly or is not being assigned a drive letter. First try this, Right-click "My Computer" > "Manage" and then click on "Disk Management", you'll be able to see Cd/Dvd-Rom drive on the lists of available Disk Management snap-ins, right click on the Cd/Dvd-Rom and click "Change Drive Letter and Paths" or it could be "Assign Drive Letter and Paths", once you click it, another dialog box will open up, click "Change" and assign a drive letter from the lists (you'll see an option as a drop-down-list), click "Ok" and restart your computer. You will be able to see the Cd-Rom drive in the My Computer directory.

If this doesn't fix your problem, you need to check the connectors of the cd-rom, means you need to unmount it from the machine and clean the connectors on the cd-rom and on the computer.

It's also possible that the cd-rom itself is defective, in that case, your only solution is replacing with a new Drive.

1) Veify its listed in device manager? To check that Right click on My computer and got to manage.There you need to click on device manager.On right side, check whether you are able to see CD/DVD listed. see the pic



If its not listed you need to reconnect the power supply.
If its listed and still not working, check the IDE or Sata cable to connected to it.Refix it.

2)Verify that the CD/DVD drive is detected by the BIOS when the computer starts

3)Verify that the CD/DVD drive has a drive letter assigned in Disk Manager



a. Click Start, and then click Run. Or click Start Search.
b. Type “diskmgmt.msc” (without the quotes), and then press ENTER
c. Verify that the CD/DVD device is assigned a drive letter (for example, “D:”)
d. If the device does not have a drive letter, then right mouse click on the CD-ROM (highlighted in red above), and select Change Drive Letters and Paths
e. Click Add, click Assign the following drive letter, and then click a drive letter from the list

4)Uninstall & Reinstall the DVD/CD-ROM drive in Device Manager

a. Click Start, and then click Run. Or click Start Search.
b. Type “devmgmt.msc” (without the quotes), and then press ENTER
c. Double click to expand DVD/CD-ROM drives
d. Right-click on the name of your DVD/CD-ROM and click Uninstall
e. Select OK to the Confirm Device Removal (Windows XP) or Confirm Device Uninstall (Windows Vista) dialog
f. Right mouse click your computer name and select Scan for hardware changes
g. Close Device Manager

I have the same situation. My computer has a
DVD-RW/CD-RW installed yet when it is empty, the computer simply recognizes it as a CD drive. However, it will automatically recognize any DVD I place in the drive. Even a blank DVD-R. So it's not really a problem for me.

Also, if you type in DEVICE MANAGER in your windows search area, it will show you all your computer's hardware and peripherals. I have Windows Vista 64 bit and in device manager it does recognize it as an ATAPI DVD under "DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES".

I haven't seen a DVD burner yet that won't play or write cd's; maybe this is standard.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as it performs the functions (play/burn DVD's?)

go into device manager and see if your drive is listed or has an exclamation point beside it.if you dont know how to open device manger go to start menu and click help and search device manager.if there is an exclamation point ! click it and it will tell you the problem.you may need to download a new driver or reinstall the old driver. the only other possibility is the drive is dead :(

Try to do this, when you see the dell logo, keep on tapping f12 then choose cd rom or dvd rom device, then keep on tapping enter until you will be able to see the setup page of the program/os that you are installing.

Won't recognize any disk, CD or DVD and won't play any audio video

Inside the Control Panels, look for System. Double-click System and choose Device Manager. Inside Device Manager, find the CD/DVD and "Uninstall" the device. Restart the computer and let it re-load the driver. This might help. You can also try a CD/DVD laser lens cleaner.
