SOURCE: Canon PowerShot SD870 IS camera - Lens Does Not Fully Retract

Canon SD870 IS. Lense Error. Would not retract on power-down. Lense error reported when retracting zoom.

Noticed the rectangular frame about the lens was rotated off center. Manually rotated (squared-up) the lens rectangle while repeatedly powering the camera on and off. Modulating the power allowed for easier rotation of the rectangular lens frame.

Once the lens frame was square with the body of the camera, the lens completely retracted on power-down, and also zoomed in/out without error.

SOURCE: Canon Ixus 105 lens fail restart camera

This is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply become dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse then contact the Canon service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed the cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose by trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault.

If the link doesn't work then cut and paste the following address into your browser:-

Good luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera. Please take a moment to rate the free answer I have provided for you.

No, because Canon's do not have any internal memory. A memory card is always needed.

There is caution that lens error.will shut down automatically, restart camera

hi if your lens looks bad like crooked, then you have to send to canon. They don't sell lens unit to local repair shop. but not serious problem (lens repairable) then bring to local repair shop. canon will charge you about $135, local repair shop would charge you $65 Thanks and good luck with you!

something has malfunctioned in the lens motor itself, unfortunately this means that your going to have to take the camera into a repair shop or send it back to canon for repair.

Turned on ixus 75 and i have a black screen

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help. Pay particular attention to Fix #5A of the link.

Sd400 lens won't close..turns on for aseveral seconds then shuts off...

Hi, common problem with these, basically some dust particles have become trapped in the shutter or the rails on which the shutter runs on. A quich blast of pc dust cleaner or similar compressed air cleaner will shift it. No need to open any parts of the camera, f you do, you will void your warranty if it is still valid.
