We had this happen to our Kenmore washer. Your solution might be the same as ours.
The reason that the agitation cycle won't start is that the safety switch that senses door closure is out of adjustment or broken. They're hard to get at on our Kenmore, so I just took a short length of fish tank plastic air supply hose and slid it over the probe on the door that pushes the switch open. The added length (try half an inch), was enough to push the safety switch and start the agitation cycle. It's not elegant, but has been a permanent solution for us!
It could be the motor if you do not hear or feel any type of hum or vibration during the time when it should be Agitating or spinning. If you do hear or feel a hum or vibration then it is most likely the belt has either broken or fell off, another posability is the spring attached to the belt tensioner has broken. Most all of these problems are easily fixed but usually require ordering the needed part.
This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action
Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
If it neither drains nor spins, the first thing to check is the Lid Switch. This prevents the machine from draining and spinning if the lid is open.
I assume that you cannot hear the motor trying to turn.
Following is a Whirlpool installation and maintenance PDF on top load, direct drive washers. It has a description of how to by-pass the switch.
It also has a troubleshooting guide.
To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, remove the two plastic clips from the console, remove the two screws under the clips, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.
With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.
If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.
You said, washer is full of water and will not spin. You hear the lid switch
clicking. When you start it on spin cycle and hear a hum, the tub moves a
couple of inches and then stops...shortly after it shuts off.
Some reasons this may happen Washer won’t drain or spinn 1. Is the drain hose clogged, or the end of the drain hose more than 72 inches (183 cm) above the floor? 2. Is the lid open? ............Also the lid switch can be faulty!! The lid must be closed during operation. 3. Is there excessive sudsing? Always measure detergent. Follow manufacturer’s directions. 4 If you have very soft water, you might need to use less detergent.
Sounds to me like the lid switch can be faulty!!Then it acts like the lid is open. Huuum
if the wash water isn't draining you have a bad lid switch back out the two screws at the bottom of the control panel in the back pull the control panel forward tilt it back on its hinges on the body of the washer you will see a connector with three wires grey green purple make sure the knob is in disconnect the connector and put a jumper wire from gray to purple where it goes to the control panel pull out the knob and see what happens
